‘ADDING THRILLS TO ITS SAFETY HERITAGE’ When you think of Volvo you think of its great safety record-solid and strong. With the new Volvo C30 T5 R-Design ‘Polestar’ edition you can add a thrilling and exciting ride with great sport coupe aggressive looks and a comfortable, sports car inspired cabin. The new C30 T5 R-Design ‘Polestar’ is now about attitude and it comes with the looks and performance to back it up. Last year Volvo designers gave the C30 an all-new front with a radically altered fascia, fenders, trapezoidal headlights and honeycomb grille wearing an enlarged Volvo iron mark. Along with the angled lines from the front bumper, the headlight style reinforces the impression of speed and sport. The contours of the muscular rear bumper were made curvier, more dynamic with a spoiler mounted to the top of the glass liftgate and uniquely styled diffuser with wide, dual chrome-tipped exhaust tips. The ten piece aero kit gives the overall look an even more aggressive stance and further lowers the center of gravity increasing its already great handling capabilities. Moving the new C30 T5 R-Design ‘Polestar’ is Volvo’s 2.5 liter, all-aluminum, continuous variable valve time with variable intake timing, turbocharged, 5-cylinder engine that generates 227hp at 5,000rpm and 236lb.ft. of torque at 1,500-5,000rpm. The potent engine is mated to a standard, smooth shifting short throw six-speed manual or an optional five-speed ‘Geartronic’ automatic with Auto-Stick sequential gearbox turning the front wheels. I tested the six-speed and found it to be fun and easy to change gears, up or down, making the ride even more fun, easy and exciting to drive. Thanks to its compact size and clever aero design, the Volvo C30 T5 R-Design ‘Polestar’ is as fun to drive as it is to admire. I couldn’t believe how many people came over to me when getting out of or into the car when parked to ask who the automaker was and when I told them it was a Volvo they couldn’t believe me until they noticed the Volvo marque on the front grille. Its generous front and rear tracks and a relatively long wheelbase contribute to inspiring and stable driving characteristics. The chassis, with MacPherson front suspension and a multi-link rear axle, is optimized to provide outstanding control and precise response to my inputs, and it really does. The tubular strut tower brace only adds to the road hugging capabilities

The 2013 Lexus GS 35- F Sport. Image: Lexus Lexus has announced a voluntary safety recall for one of its latest models, the 2013 GS 350 F Sport. As the car has only recently begun shipping, the total distributed population of the model is relatively low, and only some 650 units are affected by the recall. As Motor Authority points out, the issue is the control unit behind the Variable Gear Ratio Steering. A programming defect can cause the steering wheel to become off-centered when the car is parked with the steering wheel turned, then immediately restarted. Lexus is unaware of any accidents or injuries related to this defect, which will be corrected with a reflash of the control unit responsible for the car’s electronic Variable Gear Ratio Steering. Owners will be notified by Lexus beginning in June, but those with questions or concerns can reach Lexus’ customer service at (800) 255-3987. Announced with much fanfare during this year’s Super Bowl, the 2013 Lexus GS 350 F Sport is the luxury automaker’s attempt to broaden its sport-sedan offerings. While the F Sport gets the same 306-horsewpower 3.5-liter V-6 as the rest of the GS 350 product line, it benefits from bigger wheels and tires, more aggressive suspension tuning and a body kit to improve aerodynamics.

The 2012 Lexus HS 250h. Image: Lexus Lexus launched the HS 250h hybrid in the U.S. in the summer of 2009, as a 2010 model. Meant as a fuel-efficient bookend to Lexus’ other entry-level offering, the rear-drive IS sedan, the HS 250h never really took off in the U.S. market. As Inside Line reports, sales in the 2010 model year were acceptable, hitting 10,663 units, but plummeted to just 2,864 units for 2011

Nowhere is it written that muscle cars must be ancient relics, stuffed full of carburetor-fed, hydrocarbon-belching V-8 engine and fitted with the kind of primitive suspensions usually found on farm wagons. There are plenty of muscle cars available from new car dealers, like anything with an SRT badge, the upcoming Chevy SS and the Cadillac CTS-V series. Most discussions of muscle cars don’t extend to station wagons, either, but the CTS-V wagon is equally adept at hauling groceries, hauling the family or just plain hauling ass. Unlike that Buick Roadmaster wagon your grandfather owned, the CTS-V wagon handles as well as anything with the mass of a small planet can, thanks to both its Magnetic Ride Control suspension and the electro-wizardry of stability control. On a dry track, the CTS-V is quite a bit faster than you think it will be. Throw some rain into the mix, and the weaknesses of 556 horsepower sent to two wheels only, coupled with a long wheelbase, begin to become apparent. Enter the BMW X5 M, which exists in the category of “Uber SUV” alongside rides like the Porsche Cayenne Turbo and the Jeep Grand Cherokee SRT 8. Like the CTS-V wagon, the X5 M is a lot faster than you’d expect it to be, and it’s M-tuned stability control and all-wheel-drive system don’t care much if the track is dry, wet or somewhere in between.

Even in base form, the Nissan GT-R is almost unbelievably quick, and blessed with the kind of handling limits that few owners will test, even on track days. While we get the “Black Edition” in the United States, with extras like lighter Rays Wheels and a carbon-fiber rear spoiler, we don’t get the “Track Pack,” which is reserved for the right-hand-drive markets of Japan and Great Britain. In Britain, the Track Pack adds nearly $16,000 to the cost of a GT-R, and on the surface it’s easy to question where that money was spent. The car gets lighter wheels (same as the Black Edition cars, as far as we can tell), a stiffer suspension, brake cooling ducts, sticky seat fabric and a rear-seat delete to save weight. Customers can even have the suspension set to road (less negative camber) or track (more negative camber) by their dealer. It may not seem logical to benchmark the Nissan GT-R against Porsche’s uber-grand-tourer, the 911 Turbo S, but Harris makes a pretty good argument for the comparison. Cost difference aside (in Britain, the Turbo S costs some $71,000 more than the GT-R Track Pack), both cars have force-fed engines that produce over 500 horsepower and both feature all-wheel-drive. Both cars shift via flappy-paddle gearboxes, and both feature adjustable suspensions and variable stability control. In the end, Harris gives a fair assessment of both cars, and we have to agree with his summation.

Gazoo Racing's Sport FR Concept. Image: Gazoo Racing So much for the debate on whether or not a turbocharger setup will fit under the hood of the Scion FR-S: Japan’s Gazoo Racing has found a way to stuff both a turbocharger and a supercharger under the hood of the new Toyota GT86/Scion FR-S. The report comes from FT-86 Club via Autoblog , but there isn’t a lot of detail to be had on Gazoo’s efforts just yet. The build included a Gazoo turbo and blower, Gazoo exhaust, Gazoo suspension and brake upgrades and a body kit that includes a sizable rear wing.

The new Scion FR-S, along side of the Subaru BRZ, will be among the most affordable new rear-wheel-drive sports cars around. To demonstrate the sportiness that can be had for just over 24 grand , Scion has released its new FR-S commercial reiterating how the ‘Sport Is Back’. All together, the new 2013 Scion FR-S commercial seems to be well thought-out and enthusiast driven. Even the drift action will raise the eyebrows of non-carbuffs who may cultivate a desire within them to check out the most exciting thing to hit a Toyota/Scion dealership showroom in a very long time. The new 2013 Scion FR-S will officially go on sale June 1 st with a starting MSRP of $24,930.

Earlier this past weekend, a horrific crash between a rare Ferrari 599 GTO and a taxi cab claimed three lives . The accident took place on an intersection where the Ferrari allegedly ran a traffic light with excessive speed crashing into a taxi cab full of passengers. The unfortunate circumstances of this accident bring about a harsh reality of those who fail to obey the rules of the road. Just recently, a video of this incident taking place was posted online from the dashboard cam of some very lucky individuals crossing the same intersection. Our thoughts and prayers go out to the families of the three individuals who died as a result of this dreadful crash. Please people, be safe out there.

Sean Kennedy, about to drive Mark Heidaker's Ford GT into the record books. The concept is pretty simple: find a straight, wide and under-utilized concrete runway, preferably as long as possible. Invite the fastest cars and bikes you can find to drop the hammer for a set distance, usually a half or full mile, and document the results. That was the recipe for success followed by last weekend’s Houston Half Mile, which builds on the success of similar events such as the Texas mile. At last Saturday’s Houston Half Mile event, Mark Heidaker’s 2,000 horsepower Ford GT (tuned by Hennessey Performance) ran 212.9 mph over the half mile with driver Sean Kennedy behind the wheel.

On May 10, 2012 heaven received an Angel and the World lost an automotive legend, Carroll Hall Shelby. Carroll Shelby was much more than just an automotive pioneer, he was an overcomer. During his childhood years, doctors took note of a heart valve leakage issue that would place Shelby in a bed for many years. Doctors even speculated that he would not get to see his teenage years. As time passed, a higher calling was upon Shelby as his health started to improve and by the age of 14 he was given a clean bill of health. Starting off his working career as a chicken farmer, Shelby quickly made a change by joining the US Army Air Corps serving as a test pilot and instructor. As endearing as he was, Shelby became a racing driver for Allard, Aston Martin and even Maserati in the early 1950’s. Winning his first race in 1952 set-forth a motion in the Automotive world that could not be reckoned with. His love for cars stirred up a passion that would bring about a forward moving momentum that will live on in the automotive world forever.

Dru Diesner's 1972 Nova At first glance, Dru Diesner’s 1972 Chevy Nova isn’t a car you want to be seen in. It’s time-faded paint has gone from simply ugly to hideous, and its flanks are marred by dents and dings. The wheels are steelies with dog-dish hubcaps, sporting 1970’s chic whitewall tires that look as if they’ve come from the “any tire $5” pile. It’s so ugly that we wouldn’t even call it a rat rod; instead, it’s just plain ratty. Don’t think of the outside appearance as anything but camouflage, since under the hood lurks a twin supercharged LS2 V-8 that produces some 1,160 horsepower – at the rear wheels. We’re fairly certain that’s more than a Bugatti Veyron Supersport, which makes 1,184 horsepower at that crank, but significantly less to the wheels. Wheel to Wheel Powertrain’s Kurt Urban (now owner of Kurt Urban Performance ) built the car to be the ultimate sleeper

The Lotus Evora S at the Geneva Motor Show. Image: Lotus When Lotus’ former owner, Proton, was sold to industrial conglomerate DRB-Hicom, rumors of a pending Lotus sales jumped from simmer to full boil. After all, Lotus had never returned a profit for Proton, and the boutique sports car brand’s future plans would take serious money to see through. Throw in an aging and pinpoint-focused product mix, and it looked like the future for Lotus was anything but certain. Earlier this month Lotus received funding from DRB-Hicom to resume operations, and now Autocar (via Left Lane News ) is reporting that a Lotus sale is off the table. In the words of DRB-Hicom’s managing director Dato’ Sri Haji Hohd Khamil Bin Jamil, the company is “not thinking about a sale” of the Hethel-based brand. That’s for now, anyway, since the DRB-Hicomm head was quick to qualify that one should “never say never” in regards to spinning off the halo brand. The company’s full review of Lotus is currently underway, so it may still be months before the ultimate fate of the automaker is decided.

The highly anticipated Audi S6 does not look much different from its A6 foundation but it proves to be quite the contrast when it comes to performance numbers. The looks should not fool you at all because the new 2013 Audi S6 is nothing close to a pushover when you consider it’s astonishing and eyebrow raising performance numbers scored by Car and Driver . The guys at Car and Driver were among the first to get their hands on a new 2013 Audi S6 and ring it out to lay down some test figures. Among those test figures, the 420 horsepower twin-turbocharged V8-powered 7-speed dual-clutch all-wheel-drive S6 rocketed its way to 60 mph in 3.7 seconds and burned up the quarter mile in 12.1 seconds at 115 mph. By the numbers, enthusiasts would not first guess that these specifications belong to a mid-sized Audi. After-all, Audi conservatively rates the S6 0-60 mph time at 4.8 seconds. If you ask me, that’s a pretty damn reserved figure considering Car and Driver’s test numbers. For years, the Audi S line of vehicles has been the ultimate luxury sleeper but still an underdog when it came to the numbers when pitted against other direct German competitors. This time, the tables have turned while Audi takes advantage of their lightweight aluminum construction and efficient, yet powerful, powertrains.

If you are old enough, then you remember a time when your imaginary expressions reached as far as a piece of paper and pencil. Now days, thanks photoshop and other applications from the latest Adobe software suite, someone’s imagination takes on a completely new life form. As evidence, Inside Line posted the a rendering of what could resemble the next Ford Mustang . Considering how other sources have drawn the conclusion of the 2015 Ford Mustang receiving a complete make-over to favor the new Fusion and Evos Concept, enthusiasts are not taking this news too lightly. The latest rendering, clearly not the real thing, has drawn some skepticism from die-hard Mustang enthusiasts. Some have expressed positive aspects of the design that you see here, while others carefully selected some choice 4-letter words to describe ones imaginary futuristic Mustang design. We beg to ask our readers, what do you think of Ford heading in this “new” direction for the next Mustang?

Cadillac's CUE iPad app. Image: © GM Corp. When Hyundai launched its upscale Equus sedan in the United States, it did so with an innovative marketing move: rather than include a paper version of the owners manual, it loaded the full document onto an Apple iPad, which was included with the purchase of the car. That lasted exactly one model year, and Equus models now come with an abbreviated owners manual and a a DVD packed with the full version. To mark the launch of its CUE (Cadillac User Experience) infotainment system in the upcoming Cadillac XTS, the luxury automaker is doing something very similar. XTS buyers will get a free iPad, but it won’t come loaded with just the car’s owner’s manual. Instead, it will contain an app that mirrors the CUE interface, allowing XTS buyers to learn the system when and where they choose. The iPad will also contain the MyCadillac app, which allows owners to locate a dealer, schedule service, read the owners manual, get reminders on parking or summon roadside assistance, and the OnStar RemoteLink app, which allows remote locking and unlocking of doors and displays the status of various vehicle systems.

The Mercedes-Benz C63 AMG Black Series Coupe If you think all Mercedes-Benz models are posh luxo-barges that coddle driver and passengers in isolated comfort, think again. The Mercedes-Benz AMG Black Series has always catered to a sightly different type of buyer, one who still wants Mercedes-Benz’s engineering expertise, but with a harder edge. Black Series cars have always been about performance and handling, not about about sheer comfort and luxury. The latest Black Series model, the C63 AMG Coupe is no exception to this rule. Output gets bumped up from 451 horsepower and 443 pound-feet of torque in the C63 AMG to 510 hp and 457 lb-ft in the Black Series coupe, enabling it to sprint from 0-60 mph in just 4.2 seconds. To make sure the Black Series corners equally well, a coilover suspension is standard and the car’s track has been widened by 1.6 inches up front and 3.1 inches in the rear. To ensure that you can rein the car in, AMG has six-piston front calipers grabbing 15.4-inch brake rotors and four-piston calipers grabbing 14.2-inch rotors out back. Inside, you’ll find a cockpit designed to lower lap times, not provide cross-country comfort. The steering wheel is wrapped in Dinamica for a sure grip, while the thickly-bolstered sport seats provide plenty of lateral support for high G-force cornering

The Lamborghini Aventador LP700-4. Image: Lamborghini If you were hoping the Lamborghini Aventador Roadster would pack a slick, power-retractable hardtop like Ferrari’s 458 Italia, it appears you’re out of luck. If reports from Italy’s Quattroroute are correct, the topless Aventador will come to market with a removable targa roof, similar to that used by Bugatti on the Veyron Grand Sport. The Aventador Roadster’s top panels will be made from carbon fiber or carbon composite, and will be split in the middle for easy removal or deployment. That may make them small enough to carry on board the Aventador, eliminating the need to decide on topless motoring before leaving the garage (like the Veyron Grand Sport, whose roof can’t be stored on board the car). As for the “why,” the answer is relatively simple: adding any kind of folding top, whether manual or powered, would add more weight and would require redesign of the Aventador’s intricate engine cover. Not only is such a redesign cost-prohibitive, but it also would added significantly to the car’s development time. Assuming, of course, that the car actually exists. Lamborghini is neither confirming nor denying a topless Aventador, which means we’ll have to wait until the international auto show schedule resumes this fall before any official announcements are made.

A Lingenfelter-tuned 1993 Corvette ZR1 When we grow up, we want to be Ken Lingenfelter. Not only does he own Lingenfelter Performance Engineering (which was founded by a cousin, John Lingenfelter), but he also has one of the most impressive car collections in the United States. How many cars are in the collection? Even Ken doesn’t know for sure, saying “about 200,” since he’s afraid to give an exact count. While the collection is heavy on Corvettes (which make up about 40% of the total), there’s something for everyone. Want a Ferrari F40, a DeLorean DMC1, a Vector, an Opel GT, or a mid-seventies Pontiac Can-Am?
