Filed under: Sedan , Government/Legal , Recalls , Safety , Toyota 2003 Toyota Avalon XLS - Toyota Motor Corporation's recall woes have resurfaced today with official word that the company will recall some 373,000 second-generation Toyota Avalon models built between the 2000 and 2004 model years. According to the Japanese automaker, the full-size sedans' steering lock bars can crack, eventually leading to a break. If that failure occurs, the steering column interlock system can become difficult to unlock when parked, potentially disabling the vehicle. Worse, if the driver is in a right-hand turn with "sufficient lateral acceleration," under very specific conditions, the damaged lock bar can actually engage, locking the steering wheel and disabling steering control of the vehicle, a condition that increases the likelihood of an accident. For its part, Toyota says it is unaware of any crashes stemming from the Avalon's steering interlock issue, and it will replace the steering column bracket in affected vehicles for free. The complete press release is available after the jump .
After Ford’s recent unveiling of the new 2011 Ford Explorer , many people were left wondering what the price of the 2011 Ford Explorer would be. Ford has officially priced the new 2011 Ford Explorer at a starting point of $28,190. This price point places the new Explorer in the mix of its SUV lineup mostly consisting of other cross-over vehicles such as the Ford Escape, Edge and Flex. The big Ford Expedition remains if you want to venture farther away from the traditional unit-body constructed crossovers. What does $28,190 get you?

Filed under: Concept Cars , Convertible , Hybrid , Porsche , Electric Porsche 918 Spyder concept - As expected, the Porsche supervisory board has approved the development of the 918 Spyder concept into a series production model. The 918 debuted as a concept at this year's Geneva Motor Show with a plug-in hybrid powertrain claimed to provide 78 miles per gallon. The concept used a 500-horsepower V8 along with a pair of electric motors with 109 hp each and a lithium ion battery that can provide 16 miles of emissions-free driving from grid energy. The powertrain is not expected to be changed much for production and Porsche has not announced when 918 will be available. There has been speculation that the production model could cost up to €500,000 (about $650,000 USD), although if it comes to the States, it should be eligible for a federal tax credit. Even with up to $7,500 it still makes the Chevrolet Volt look downright cheap . Before you start looking in your couch cushions for a down payment, check out the official press release after the jump and our high-res gallery below.
A new video documenting the Pagani Zonda R’s 6-minute 47-second Nurburgring lap time has been released. The Zonda R lap time shatters the one set some time ago by the Ferrari 599XX at 6:58. Even though the Zonda R is built off of a street-car design, it is not a street-legal car therefore this will not go down in the record book for fastest production car around the Ring. Still, the Radical SR8LM holds the record for fastest street-legal car around the Nurburgring with a recorded time of 6:48. The Pagani Zonda R is pure race-car tipping the scale at only 2,359lbs. The Zonda R is capable of a mad dash to 60mph from a standstill in just 2.7 seconds mainly due to its 750 horsepower and 524 ft-lbs of torque 6.0-liter AMG V12 engine. To witness that shear power for yourself, check out the full Zonda R Nurburgring run video below. Enjoy!

General Motors is now taking orders for the new 2011 Chevy Volt which touts a price tag of $41,000 before the $7,500 tax credit which will only be paid to new buyers through their tax return. That makes the effective-purchase-price only $33,500. Those looking to hop in a new Volt will also get the option to enter into a 3-year lease for $350 a month. For those looking to lease the 2011 Chevy Volt there will be a $2,500 down payment requirement which is $500 more than the Nissan Leaf’s lease program but Chevy will give customers the option to purchase the vehicle after the lease term. The 2011 Chevrolet Volt comes well equipped which is something that may change in the near future to bring down the initial price. Currently it will come standard with a navigation system displayed on a 7-inch color screen, Bluetooth connectivity, Bose audio, five years of OnStar, heated leather seats, chrome wheels, rear park assist and most importantly, an eight-year/100,000 mile battery warranty. It is expected that the Volt will retain its value very well for those who choose to purchase the vehicle after the 3-year lease term. For those who purchase the Volt, do not be surprised to see extra markups due to high demand at your local “Volt-approved” Chevy dealership. GM has discouraged dealerships from doing this but we are not sure if they can actually control any price markups.

In the latest episode on Jay Leno’s Garage, Justin Bell takes the Porsche 911 GT3 on some back roads on the way to Laguna Seca where he meets up with Patrick Long and his GT3 race car. The latest Porsche 911 GT3 now packs 435hp from an all-motor (naturally aspirated) flat-6-cyl. Supposedly all the fun happens between 40mph and 100mph according to Jay Leno. I can agree with him but let’s check out what Justin Bell and Porsche’s only American factory driver, Flying Lizard’s Patrick Long, has to say about it all in the video below. Enjoy!

Filed under: Motorsports , Motorcycle , Racing MotoGP action from Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca - We're live from Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca today for the Red Bull U.S. Grand Prix, and we just witnessed some awesome racing action. Well, awesome for some riders, less so for others. For instance, we're certain that Factory Honda rider Dani Pedrosa isn't particularly pleased with his result. After leading the race for the first 11 laps, Pedrosa crashed out at turn five. Yamaha-mounted Jorge Lorenzo, who had positioned himself in second position following Pedrosa, inherited first place. He would not relinquish his grip on the lead for the remainder of the race, earning his sixth win of the 2010 season and his first at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca. The rest of the field sorted itself out over the course of the race, with Ducati (for now, at least) rider Casey Stoner finding himself in second place behind Lorenzo by 3.5 seconds.

We guessed it in our review of the 2010 Chevy Camaro SS , the new 2012 Camaro Z28 will come out and it will sport a 6.2-liter Supercharged V8! This is news hot off of the press as spy shots recently posted on Camaro5.com confirm this rumor. Further proof of concept is via a spy photograph that reveals a paper sign on the dash of the test car reading: “5. 2012 Chevrolet Camaro… 6.2L SC V8, 6AT”. We can pretty much sum up what that lingo means but just like it says on Camaro5, we are not sure if it is the LS9 (Corvette ZR1) or the LSA motor. I am thinking 556 horsepower or more! We will be sure to post more details as they are provided. You can view all spy photos on Camaro5.com . [source: Camaro5 ]

In terms of a numbers battle, the BMW 1 Series M Coupe will have between 340-350 horsepower from its turbocharged inline 6-cyl.
Filed under: GM , Earnings/Financials General Motors has just announced its intent to acquire AmeriCredit Corp. According to the automaker, the move should give dealers an added finance option when it comes to putting car shoppers into a new vehicle. Since GM and GMAC parted ways back in 2006, buyers looking to purchase a car or truck from The General have faced tougher financing terms than in the past. Supposedly, the new deal with AmeriCredit will provide new opportunities for sub-prime borrowers. The total cost of the deal? A cool $3.5 billion in straight cash. GM says that putting AmeriCredit under its wing is the next logical step in moving toward an IPO , and most analysts seem to agree. The carmaker had been criticized for not having an in-house financing arm in the past, but the new move should afford the company and its dealership network an added level of financing flexibility

Filed under: Government/Legal , Recalls , Safety , Toyota Automotive News reports that a federal grand jury in New York has subpoenaed Toyota for documentation related to a component in the steering mechanism of some of its vehicles. The company announced that the subpoena came on June 29, but isn't yet saying publicly which vehicles are involved with the issue. What we do know is that the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration initiated an investigation in February of 749,685 2009 and 2010 model year Corolla and Matrix vehicles for a potential steering issue . Toyota has received 437 reports, including 11 injuries and 18 crashes, since 2008, and NHTSA has received 168 complaints. In affected Corolla and Matrix models the electric power steering units are reportedly prone to drifting or locking up, with the problem most notable when cruising at highway speeds. The Japanese automaker has stated publicly that the issue is not a safety recall, though it intends to service the vehicles of Corolla and Matrix owners who say they have an issue. NHTSA still has not revealed the results of it's investigation. This subpoena is the third Toyota has received so far in 2010, with the first coming in February due to unintended acceleration issues and the second from the Michigan Attorney General for recall issues in March. Toyota has recalled 10.8 million vehicles worldwide for acceleration-related issues

Filed under: Budget , China , GM While the German automakers - and Buick - mop up outrageous demand for their wares in China's major metropolitan and coastal cities, General Motors wants to be the nameplate of choice in the secondary cities and the interior. And now in conjunction with its joint-venture partners SAIC and Wuling, it has launched another nameplate: Baojun. Meaning "treasured horse," Baojun is the low-cost brand that will sell passenger cars built in China for priced in the area of $7,000 . The Baojun's sales network will be built after the car is launched, but GM hasn't let slip when that will be. The aims are lofty for the small runabout tasked with opening up another market segment, with the general manager of SAIC-GM-Wuling declaring, "We aim to surpass customer expectations by creating a brand that combines world-class quality with low ownership costs." Follow the jump for the press release on the venture.
Lately Nissan has been a front-runner for exciting vehicles that hit the U.S. shores from Japan. That excitement factor is carried over through most of the Nissan and Infiniti line of cars. It is even somewhat found in the new 2010 Nissan Murano. Ever since the Nissan Murano’s introduction in 2003, it has helped set the standard for what a true crossover utility vehicle should represent. Not just in terms of performance and excitement, but as a functional unit body SUV built off of a car platform. The Nissan Murano still shares many of its counterparts with the Nissan Altima just as it did over 8 years ago. Both the Altima and Murano have grown up receiving its latest major redesign in 2008 as a 2009 model (there never was a 2008 Nissan Murano). Some of the notable changes from an exterior viewing perspective would be the front fascia and headlights along with a new tail sporting LED brake lamps and amber turn signals.

As funny and interesting as it may seem for people to been seen driving around BMW’s prototype 1-Series M Coupe still in camouflage, it still makes for great entertainment. You will find the video of Chris riding in the new BMW 1 Series M Coupe below. Is the BMW 1-Series M Coupe a true one-of-a-kind M-Car or is it BMW’s edition of “honey I shrunk the M3”? From Chris’s Blog: “At the M3 GTS launch yesterday BMW also rolled-out a 1 Series M development hack. This caught us all slightly unawares, especially when they said they’d do a few passenger rides. So, in the true spirit of low-quality, gorilla video I did my best to capture something.

I honestly cannot think of the last time that I saw an exclusive Chevy Corvette Commercial on TV. It is about time GM puts some marketing behind a remarkable sports car and major staple in American ingenuity. In the newly released Corvette commercial GM features the new ZR1 and says “It’s nice to know America still builds rockets”. Just the other day GM announced they would let future buyers of Corvette Z06 and ZR1s to assemble their own engine. I speculate GM will attempt to give the Corvette a better image through more marketing like this.

The new 2011 Mercedes-Benz SL 6.3 AMG is indeed ‘perfection in motion’. The SL 6.3 AMG is the most technologically advanced of all SL class models and is the perfect fit for high-performance driving with the finest in luxury and convenience features. The SL is alone in its segment, only the Lexus SC430 gives some competition, but it hasn’t been updated since its introduction and the horsepower and performance figures are lacking. Pure four-season comfortable driving abilities make the SL 6.3 AMG truly unique. Just one touch of the console-mounted aluminum toggle and the top is up or down in a quick 16-seconds, transforming the car from a quiet, weather-tight coupe to a open-air roadster with the sun in your face and the wind in your hair, the epitome of driving sensations. My test SL 6.3 AMG came with the optional sunroof feature. Instead of a metal roof, you get tinted glass enabling you to still watch the sky with the top up. Under the hood lies one of the most powerful naturally aspirated production V8s ever built, boasting a long list of exciting features derived from AMG’s highly successful racing efforts. Built almost completely by hand from a high-strength silicon-aluminum alloy, the engine features four-valves per cylinder, variable valve timing, bucket-type cam followers (rather than rocker arms), and variable intake manifold. Designed exclusively by AMG, the engine shares no parts with other Mercedes-Benz V8 engines. The cylinder bores feature a twin-wire arc-sprayed (TWAS) coating, a new process that results in impressively low friction and running surfaces that are twice as hard as conventional cast-iron cylinders. Each engine is signed with its engine builder for all to see. Awesome power ratings are 518hp at 6,800rpm and 465lb.ft. of torque 5,200rpm. That’s plenty of power to launch the SL 6.3 AMG to 60mph from a standstill in just 4.5 seconds. When you push the start button on top of the aluminum and leather wrapped stick the engine lights up with a might roar, similar to when you start a Ford Mustang GT. It then settles down to a muffled roar as you take off. I was surprised at the level of exhaust noise as you go up the gears, music to any enthusiast’s ears, and consider the sound more like a ‘hotrod’ dressed in velvet and fur
