BMW has jumped into the Super Bowl Commercial Game to score big with about 6 spots advertising the new 3 Series. Many of them are focused on new features offered on the new BMW 3 Series and the idea of BMW building only one thing, The Ultimate Driving Machine. These commercials are pretty clever and are sure to give other automotive ads a run for the money during Super Bowl XLVI. Enjoy!

For a decade, Nissan has been leading the path for crossover SUV vehicles. By expanding the crossover line with new vehicles such as the Rogue, Nissan has managed to provide consumers with a more efficient and economical alternative in a massively competitive segment. The new 2012 Nissan Rogue, continuing its versatile platform based off of the Nissan Sentra, gives drivers crisp handling and sporty characteristics in a 5-passenger compact crossover package. The Nissan Rogue, first introduced as a 2008 model, receives some additional refinement and features set for the 2012 model year. The new 2012 Rogue adds an optional Special Edition trim package and a 360-degree camera view in place of the single standard back-up camera. The new 360-degree camera view is just like Nissan’s and Infiniti’s infamous around-view monitor system.

Fernando Alonso and Felipe Massa pose with their new Jeep Grand Cherokee SRT8s Formula One drivers aren’t like you and I. They live in nicer houses, have bigger bank accounts and sometimes have garages filled with lustworthy cars. Jenson Button, for example, used to own a Bugatti Veyron, and the McLaren Mercedes driver recently sold his classic Ferrari 512 BB. It’s not uncommon for automakers partnered with F1 teams to give drivers their wares, since it’s clearly good advertising for the brand. Current world champion Sebastian Vettel drives an FX50 crossover from team sponsor Infiniti, and we’d be willing to bet he didn’t pay list price for it. Ferrari recently issued new company cars to team drivers Fernando Alonso and Felipe Massa. Instead of giving them Ferrari FFs (too long of a wait list for paying customers), or Ferrari 458 Italias (too impractical), the F1 stars each received a brand new Jeep Grand Cherokee. If you’re puzzled by the tie-in, remember the family tree that Jeep is now part of

The 2006 Honda Civic Hybrid. Image: American Honda Motor Co. If you side with plaintiff and 2006 Honda Civic Hybrid owner Heather Peters, the automaker misled buyers in its claims that the 2006 Honda Civic Hybrid could return up to 50 mpg fuel economy. If you side with Honda, the automaker claims that actual fuel economy delivered (by any car) is largely determined by driving style and maintenance performed. While enough 2006 – 2008 Honda fell short of projected mileage to file a class action lawsuit against Honda, Peters knew better than to jump on that particular bandwagon. Under the proposed class-action settlement, Civic Hybrid owners would receive just $100 and a coupon valid for $1,000 off the purchase of a new Honda automobile

In a perfect world you could build an automobile for the masses, no matter how daring or bold the design was, and the majority of auto enthusiasts would naturally be attracted to your new creation. The same thing can be said for many new crossover SUVs, especially in the luxury market. Here in America we have taken a special liking to luxury crossovers such as the Porsche Cayenne, Range Rover Evoque and even the BMW X5/X6. Undoubtedly, there is a vast market for such vehicles. The latest luxury automaker to reportedly have plans to roll out a new luxury crossover SUV, is Lamborghini. We already got wind of Bentley having an SUV on the drawing board while Maserati recently uncovered the Kubang concept, so this news is no surprise to us.

The American version of Top Gear is back for its third season, beginning on Tuesday, February 14 at 9:00. All three hosts return, so expect to see more drifting from Tanner Foust, more jokes from Adam Ferrara and more flannel from Rutledge Wood. If the clips we’ve seen so far are any indication, it looks like the series’ budget may be creeping upward with its ratings, and that’s a good thing. Yes, we know the show isn’t the equivalent of it’s English cousin, but keep in mind that Clarkson, May and Hammond have had a decade longer to perfect their version.

Volkswagen was one of the first automakers to release a teaser video for its upcoming Super Bowl ad, and we couldn’t see how dogs barking the Imperial March from Star Wars had anything to do with selling VWs. Sure, its Darth Vader spot was the unexpected hit of last year’s Super Bowl, but going back to the same well for inspiration two years in a row rarely works well. The good news is that VW’s actual big game ad doesn’t feature dogs barking in harmony, and the Star Wars connection comes from out in left field. Yes, there’s a dog (who takes inspiration from the all new VW Turbo Beetle), and there’s even a scaled-down Darth Vader. We’re not sure if that works for two years in a row; in fact, we’re not even sure if the ad works at all. It seems to us that VW spent a serious amount of money on licensing for licensing sake. Last year’s Star Wars tie-in was funny, since most of us could picture doing something similar when we were kids. This year the connection just isn’t there, and the whole intergalactic cantina scene really doesn’t add to the video. Maybe we’ve just seen one too many Super Bowl car ads this year, and we need a fresh perspective

Jerry Seinfeld ponders the new Acura NSX We haven’t been overly enthused by this year’s crop of Super Bowl ads, but then again we’re jaded moto-journalist types. It takes a lot to impress us, and partying vampires, singing dogs and re-hashed movies from the 1980s just won’t do the trick. If only an automaker could come up with something fresh and innovative, maybe we’d actually crack a smile (and admit to it). Enter two ads that have rocketed to the top of our “must-see” Super Bowl viewing list. The first video, from Toyota, imagines a world where everything is reinvented to perfection, like (Toyota claims, anyway) the new Camry. In fairness, we haven’t driven the new Camry yet, so we can’t say how good it really is (although given the last car’s entertainment value, anything is a step up). If it’s as good as the world envisioned in Toyota’s Super Bowl spot, we’re definitely putting one in the garage

The 2013 Dodge Viper. Image: Chrysler Group LLC Last night at midnight, DriveSRT teased the very first image of the next SRT Viper, rumored to be making its debut at April’s New York Auto Show. As you’d expect (since Chrysler’s been careful not to let spy photos leak), the image released doesn’t tell us a whole lot. The cabin has the same twin bubbles as the last coupe (to accommodate helmets), there’s a familiar air intake just aft of the Viper logo and the front fenders seem to carry the same muscular shape as the last car. Headlights look smaller than on the previous generation, and the teaser image doesn’t give us any idea what the new Viper’s grille will look like. Styling details aside, there’s plenty we don’t know about the next Viper. Rumor has it that the last generation’s 8.4-liter V-10 is gone, replaced by an even larger 8.7-liter V-10. We expect the car to be a bit more refined than the last model, thanks to Chrysler’s ties to Fiat (who also owns Ferrari), but no less capable on the track. We expect production of the 2013 SRT Viper to begin this fall, with inventory hitting dealer showrooms by year-end.

This weekend was the 50th anniversary running of the Rolex 24 at Daytona , and the race brought out an incredible assortment of talent to compete in both the Daytona Prototype and GT classes. It was a “who’s who” of international road racing, and Speed TV deserves credit for its non-stop coverage of the event. There was another, lesser-known race over the weekend, which pitted both amateur and pro rally drivers against one another in some of the worst imaginable conditions. The Rally America series kicked off its 2012 season this weekend, with the 38th annual Sno*Drift rally in Atlanta, Michigan. Conditions were treacherous, with road surfaces ranging from gravel to glare ice. Since the Rally America series doesn’t allow studded snow tires, the race was more about smoothness and driving style than it was about horsepower. David Higgins and co-driver Craig Drew took the win for Subaru Rally Team USA, followed by the Rockstar Energy team of Antoine L’Estage and Nathalie Richard. For the first time in series’ history, the event was streamed live over the Rally America website , and the series even used night vision cameras to capture the in-the-dark stages

The 2012 Nissan Leaf electric car. Image: Nissan Motors Just when you thought that legislators in the Golden State had come to their senses, something happens to reaffirm our opinion that California may be the least-car-enthusiast-friendly state in the country. After showing some degree of sanity by agreeing to adopt the proposed EPA mileage standard of 54.5 mpg by 2025, California has announced that, by 2025, a minimum of 15.4 percent of sales must be of electric, plug-in-hybrid or hydrogen powered vehicles. To frame that mandate with a dose of reality, let’s look at the two commercially available electric cars. In 2011, Nissan sold 9,674 Leafs in the United States; excluding trucks, that represents just 1.6 percent of its car sales in the United States. Chevrolet sold 7,671 Volts, which represented just one percent of its new car sales in the U.S. market

For years Chevrolet played the small car game, but their cards were often coming up short when vetted against the over-seas competition. This year, Chevrolet introduces the 2012 Sonic. An all-new small car from the ground up that is poised to compete worldwide. The all-new 2012 Chevrolet Sonic brings the subcompact segment back home for General Motors in a way that reaches across the pond. The 2012 Chevy Sonic is essentially a replacement for the ill-fated Daewoo-breed Chevy Aveo. Without even driving the Sonic, at first glace, I can say with a certainty that the Sonic will be a much needed improvement. As a world market competitor, the new Chevy Sonic will have no problems keeping up with the competition. The new Chevy Sonic gets a choice of two fuel-efficient yet peppy 4-cylinder engines

It’s a well known fact that our neighbors north of the border have very little sense of humor when it comes to street racing. In fact, those of us in the country to the south would have concerns about even passing another car on a Canadian highway, lest we be stopped for racing, or worse, “stunt driving.” Apparently that’s a problem for taxis in Toronto, too, and a pair of drivers recently found themselves on the wrong side of the law. As Autoblog , via Autoblog Canada , reports, the two cabbies were pulled over for “stunt driving” down Toronto’s Younge Street, which has the distinction of being the longest street in Canada. As you’d guess, Younge Street once had a reputation for being a street racer’s paradise, as least when it wasn’t snow-packed. Stunt driving comes with a seven-day license suspension and allows police to impound the vehicles involved. We’re sure the cab companies have already gotten their property back, but we’re less sure about the job security of the drivers involved in the incident. We don’t condone street racing, especially on pedestrian-clogged avenues. However, we’ve spent plenty of time in the back seat of NYC taxis and lived to tell about it. If you want to see stunt driving, climb into the back of a New York City cab at rush hour, and tell the driver there’s a $20 tip if he can get you cross town in fifteen minutes or less.

Although the new McLaren MP4-12C may not be every enthusiast’s favorite exotic car, but for Jay Leno , the MP4-12C has a soft spot in his heart no matter how well it stacks up against the competition. Before the MP4-12C was in its full production skin, Jay got to visit the McLaren factory and be one of the first to get behind the wheel of one. He liked it so much he placed his order for one. Now, Jay gets to take his very own MP4-12C down the streets of southern California after he gets a full technical rundown on his new toy from Damian Forbes, McLaren Service and Parts Manager.

Scosche Industries' cellCONTROL module. Image: Scosche Industries Scosche Industries builds accessories for car audio and consumer electronics, and it’s also created the first (that we’re aware of) legal cell phone blocking system. Unlike cell phone jammers (which have existed for years but are illegal for civilians to use), the Scosche system , called “cellCONTROL,” works via Bluetooth and only with a paired phone. As Autoblog explains, cellCONTROL is a two-part system, requiring both a smartphone app and a cellCONTROL module to function. When the app is installed on a phone, and the module is plugged into the vehicle diagnostic port, all internet connectivity, inbound and outbound calls and texts are blocked. Tamper with the module, and the account administrator will get a text or e-mail message saying the system has been disabled. Since the system detects when a vehicle is in motion, it’s smart enough to only block calls when the vehicle is moving. Likewise, calls are allowed when a paired Bluetooth hands-free device is detected. The system starts at just under $130, and we see a huge market for both parents and businesses alike.

The 2012 Fisker Karma. Image: Jay Leno's Garage Chances are good that you’ve heard of the Fisker Karma. Recently launched, the car has made appearances on CBS’s “Two And A Half Men,” but it’s already been the subject of two voluntary safety recalls by Fisker. Like the Chevrolet Volt, the Fisker Karma is an extended range electric vehicle, but unlike the Volt is aimed at the luxury market. It’s not a sport sedan, but it is a legitimate grand touring car, with a price tag (north of $100k) to match. Designed by Henrik Fisker, the Karma is powered by lithium-ion batteries driving two rear-mounted electric motors. Combined, these motors produce the equivalent of 400 horsepower and 1100 pound-feet of torque, and on battery power alone the car has a range of up to 50 miles. When the batteries run down, a gasoline-powered generator kicks in, providing power to the motors and giving the Karma a virtually unlimited range (assuming you stop for gas every 250 miles, that is)

Chevrolet is getting into the Superbowl commercial action by continuing their “Chevy Runs Deep” campaign. The Superbowl XLVI commercial, officially released yesterday, is rather clever and came about from a Chevrolet Route 66 film submission by 26-year old Long Island resident Zach Borst. The Chevy Superbowl commercial will air gameday and is shown in its full glory below for your enjoyment. I must say, it is excellent! Enjoy.

Even if you’ve never heard of Blastolene (or the Blastolene brothers), chances are very good you’ve seen its products in various YouTube videos. The Blastolene Special, for example, is a vintage-Indy-racer-styled roadster, powered by a V-12 engine liberated from an M47 Patton tank. Owned by Jay Leno, the car even appears in the Gran Turismo 4 video game. Founded by artist Randy Grubb, Blastolene is “a group of autonomous artists that are helping each other along their creative path through the application of expertise, not the exchange of monies.” In other words, its about the art and the craftsmanship, not about the profit. Art plays a major role in every Blastolene creation, and all seem to be equal parts sculpture and function.

The 2010 Peugeot 908 HDi FAP. Image: DoomWarrior When Peugeot entered the Le Mans endurance racing series in 2007, Audi was the 800 pound gorilla. Audi’s R10 diesels were unstoppable, and it seemed like Peugeot would be relegated to the also-rans, at least for its first season. Then came Peugeot victories at the Nürburgring and Spa, followed by wins at Silverstone and Interlagos. In 2009, Peugeot took victory at Le Mans, and it followed this up by winning the series title in both 2010 and 2011. Now comes word that Peugeot is withdrawing from endurance racing, citing the economic environment in Europe. The money saved will be put into the launch of five new Peugeot models, which the ailing company hopes will boost its bottom line. Peugeot has stated that it will try to relocate team members into new positions within the company, but that seems unlikely given the automaker’s previously announced layoffs of up to 6,000 employees.

Every year during the Superbowl we can all agree with the fact that the commercials are sometimes just as intense as some of the highlight plays of the game. Most notably, car commercials make up a large portion of these “spectacular” 30 second to 1 minute spots where vehicle manufacturers dump-out millions of dollars in hopes to captivate a large audience with their latest and greatest vehicle. Lexus, who has never had a presence in the lineup of multi-million dollar Superbowl commercials, will enter into the arena with their all-new 2013 Lexus GS in a 30-second spot. As an early kick-off, Lexus has provided an exclusive teaser of the commercial below. Not only will Lexus have a prime commercial spot during the Superbowl this year, but they will kick-off a new social media activation tool called “TweetDrive Engineered by Lexus” on NBCSports.com. This will give NFL fans then chance to socially engage themselves in a social-media test during the Playoffs ultimately giving them a chance to win a trip for two to any NBC Sports Premium Event.
