If someone were to ask us what’s going on with GM’s marketing and advertising these days, our honest answer would have to be, “we have no idea.” A few years back the automaker played musical chairs with its ad agencies for Chevrolet, kicking long term partner Campbell Ewald to the curb. Next came Publicis, who lasted about a month, before the Chevy account was handed off to Goodby, Silverstein & Partners, who still (more or less) has the business under the new name Commonwealth. We’d argue that Goodby’s advertising tagline, “Chevy Runs Deep,” may be the worst pitch line in the history of the automobile, and we’re far from alone in our belief. Despite public criticism, GM’s chief marketing officer Joel Ewanick seems happy with the slogan, which doesn’t appear to be going anywhere. A few weeks back, GM announced it would pull its advertising from Facebook, which it deemed as “ineffective.” Ford was quick to point out that Facebook advertising worked fine for them, as part of a multi-layered campaign to attract the all-important Millennial buyer. Now comes word that GM is pulling out of Super Bowl advertising, too, which it deems as “not cost effective” because of rising air time costs. A single 30-second ad can sell for as much as $3.8 million for airtime alone, and that cost isn’t expected to drop for future games. The Wall Street Journal quotes Joel Ewanick as saying, “It’s just getting too expensive and we’re not just going to do the same thing every year.” We doubt that Volkswagen feels the same way, and we’re pretty sure that Kia is happy with the results of its Super Bowl advertising. It helps if you create ads that don’t suck, and both the VW and Kia ads were far more upbeat than Chevy’s end-of-the-world Silverado ad seen here

‘ADDING THRILLS TO ITS SAFETY HERITAGE’ When you think of Volvo you think of its great safety record-solid and strong. With the new Volvo C30 T5 R-Design ‘Polestar’ edition you can add a thrilling and exciting ride with great sport coupe aggressive looks and a comfortable, sports car inspired cabin. The new C30 T5 R-Design ‘Polestar’ is now about attitude and it comes with the looks and performance to back it up. Last year Volvo designers gave the C30 an all-new front with a radically altered fascia, fenders, trapezoidal headlights and honeycomb grille wearing an enlarged Volvo iron mark. Along with the angled lines from the front bumper, the headlight style reinforces the impression of speed and sport. The contours of the muscular rear bumper were made curvier, more dynamic with a spoiler mounted to the top of the glass liftgate and uniquely styled diffuser with wide, dual chrome-tipped exhaust tips. The ten piece aero kit gives the overall look an even more aggressive stance and further lowers the center of gravity increasing its already great handling capabilities. Moving the new C30 T5 R-Design ‘Polestar’ is Volvo’s 2.5 liter, all-aluminum, continuous variable valve time with variable intake timing, turbocharged, 5-cylinder engine that generates 227hp at 5,000rpm and 236lb.ft. of torque at 1,500-5,000rpm. The potent engine is mated to a standard, smooth shifting short throw six-speed manual or an optional five-speed ‘Geartronic’ automatic with Auto-Stick sequential gearbox turning the front wheels. I tested the six-speed and found it to be fun and easy to change gears, up or down, making the ride even more fun, easy and exciting to drive. Thanks to its compact size and clever aero design, the Volvo C30 T5 R-Design ‘Polestar’ is as fun to drive as it is to admire. I couldn’t believe how many people came over to me when getting out of or into the car when parked to ask who the automaker was and when I told them it was a Volvo they couldn’t believe me until they noticed the Volvo marque on the front grille. Its generous front and rear tracks and a relatively long wheelbase contribute to inspiring and stable driving characteristics. The chassis, with MacPherson front suspension and a multi-link rear axle, is optimized to provide outstanding control and precise response to my inputs, and it really does. The tubular strut tower brace only adds to the road hugging capabilities

The 2012 Lexus HS 250h. Image: Lexus Lexus launched the HS 250h hybrid in the U.S. in the summer of 2009, as a 2010 model. Meant as a fuel-efficient bookend to Lexus’ other entry-level offering, the rear-drive IS sedan, the HS 250h never really took off in the U.S. market. As Inside Line reports, sales in the 2010 model year were acceptable, hitting 10,663 units, but plummeted to just 2,864 units for 2011

Nowhere is it written that muscle cars must be ancient relics, stuffed full of carburetor-fed, hydrocarbon-belching V-8 engine and fitted with the kind of primitive suspensions usually found on farm wagons. There are plenty of muscle cars available from new car dealers, like anything with an SRT badge, the upcoming Chevy SS and the Cadillac CTS-V series. Most discussions of muscle cars don’t extend to station wagons, either, but the CTS-V wagon is equally adept at hauling groceries, hauling the family or just plain hauling ass. Unlike that Buick Roadmaster wagon your grandfather owned, the CTS-V wagon handles as well as anything with the mass of a small planet can, thanks to both its Magnetic Ride Control suspension and the electro-wizardry of stability control. On a dry track, the CTS-V is quite a bit faster than you think it will be. Throw some rain into the mix, and the weaknesses of 556 horsepower sent to two wheels only, coupled with a long wheelbase, begin to become apparent. Enter the BMW X5 M, which exists in the category of “Uber SUV” alongside rides like the Porsche Cayenne Turbo and the Jeep Grand Cherokee SRT 8. Like the CTS-V wagon, the X5 M is a lot faster than you’d expect it to be, and it’s M-tuned stability control and all-wheel-drive system don’t care much if the track is dry, wet or somewhere in between.

Even in base form, the Nissan GT-R is almost unbelievably quick, and blessed with the kind of handling limits that few owners will test, even on track days. While we get the “Black Edition” in the United States, with extras like lighter Rays Wheels and a carbon-fiber rear spoiler, we don’t get the “Track Pack,” which is reserved for the right-hand-drive markets of Japan and Great Britain. In Britain, the Track Pack adds nearly $16,000 to the cost of a GT-R, and on the surface it’s easy to question where that money was spent. The car gets lighter wheels (same as the Black Edition cars, as far as we can tell), a stiffer suspension, brake cooling ducts, sticky seat fabric and a rear-seat delete to save weight. Customers can even have the suspension set to road (less negative camber) or track (more negative camber) by their dealer. It may not seem logical to benchmark the Nissan GT-R against Porsche’s uber-grand-tourer, the 911 Turbo S, but Harris makes a pretty good argument for the comparison. Cost difference aside (in Britain, the Turbo S costs some $71,000 more than the GT-R Track Pack), both cars have force-fed engines that produce over 500 horsepower and both feature all-wheel-drive. Both cars shift via flappy-paddle gearboxes, and both feature adjustable suspensions and variable stability control. In the end, Harris gives a fair assessment of both cars, and we have to agree with his summation.

Filed under: Budget , Sedan , Mazda , New Car Reviews Ably Carrying The Banner For Internal Combustion Forget the Mazda CX-5 . The Mazda3 still carries the sales gravitas that the CX-5 aspires to, but for now, the C-segment sedan and hatchback that has provided eight years of sales bedrock is still the most important Mazda model. That's why, after making hay with the debut of the CX-5 crossover and its innovative Skyactiv powertrain, the tried-and-true Mazda3 was the next in line for the engine, transmission and aero-tweak hat trick that's allowed the car to claim a 40 miles per gallon highway fuel economy rating. Putting a new engine in an older car as a way to boost interest and sales isn't a new idea, of course. Sometimes it works, and other times it's not enough to re-float sales that have run aground on the sandbar of customer ennui. The Mazda3 has also consistently pleased enthusiasts, so we wanted to find out how its comportment has changed after the heart transplant.

The new 2012 Infiniti G37 Hardtop Convertible continues to offer exceptional value in a package consisting of advanced technology, performance and luxury. The new 2012 Infiniti G37 Convertible, virtually unchanged from the 2011 model year, remains to offer the versatility of a luxury sports coupe and a convertible. Placed in the ring with luxury hardtop convertibles such as the Lexus IS C, the new G37 Convertible manages to offer a slight edge in terms of a more powerful standard V6 engine combined with a 6-speed manual transmission option. As with any other hardtop convertible, the G37 gives passengers the needed isolation from road noise when compared to convertibles with a fabric top. The aluminum folding roof takes a while to fold, about 25 seconds, but is well worth the wait when you get to enjoy the open top and sporty attitude of the 325 horsepower and 267 ft. lbs. of torque 3.7-liter V6 engine. Just like my test vehicle from last year , my 2012 G37 Sport Convertible’s V6 engine was mated to a 6-speed manual transmission

Let’s say you’re lucky enough to own a collection of classic and exotic Porsches. When it’s time for an engine rebuild on a 356 or 911SC, that task can be farmed out to any number of shops specializing in Porsche, since parts are available and neither model is very specialized. On the other hand, when it’s time for a complete restoration on your 959 or original 550 Spyder, do you really want to trust that work to anyone other than Porsche itself? For customers that want Porsches restored to original specs, in some cases by the workers who originally built the car, there’s Porsche Classic. Part of Porsche AG, Porsche Classic exists to restore and maintain classic road-going Porsches. They won’t touch your Porsche racer, since that’s the job of Rennsport, but they’ll to everything from routine maintenance to a rotisserie restoration on your classic street-legal Porsche.

We’ll admit to having a bad infatuation with the new BMW M135i. We like it’s lines far better than the 1 Series M coupe’s, and it’s hatchback practicality appeals to us, too. It’s “off-limits” nature, at least in the United States, only makes it that much more alluring, since it’s human nature to want what you can’t have. The M Performance hatchbacks will come to market with a 3.0-liter inline-six engine, good for 320 horsepower in European trim. Specific details on suspension tuning are lacking, although we wouldn’t be a bit surprised if the M Performance cars were just a bit softer than the actual BMW M cars. In other words, we’d expect a 1 Series M to spank the M135i around a racetrack, but the M135i would probably be more comfortable getting there and back. BMW promises that U.S. customers will get an M Performance 1 Series of our own, but we’d be shocked if it were anything other than a coupe

If you are old enough, then you remember a time when your imaginary expressions reached as far as a piece of paper and pencil. Now days, thanks photoshop and other applications from the latest Adobe software suite, someone’s imagination takes on a completely new life form. As evidence, Inside Line posted the a rendering of what could resemble the next Ford Mustang . Considering how other sources have drawn the conclusion of the 2015 Ford Mustang receiving a complete make-over to favor the new Fusion and Evos Concept, enthusiasts are not taking this news too lightly. The latest rendering, clearly not the real thing, has drawn some skepticism from die-hard Mustang enthusiasts. Some have expressed positive aspects of the design that you see here, while others carefully selected some choice 4-letter words to describe ones imaginary futuristic Mustang design. We beg to ask our readers, what do you think of Ford heading in this “new” direction for the next Mustang?

Filed under: Sedan , Chevrolet , GM , New Car Reviews Mild-Hybrid Malibu Proves Only Mildly Interesting Don't judge a book by its cover. The sentiment certainly applies to cars as well, but doubly so. Years of driving and photographing new vehicles have taught us that you can't evaluate a new model - or even judge its styling - based on photos alone, no matter how good or bad the images or the sheetmetal might seem. And you can't really know anything until you get that car off the auto show stand and out in the wild, driving it on the street in its natural habitat. We explain this because when we first spied the new 2013 Chevrolet Malibu , we didn't think much of it: Mostly carryover front fascia, grafted-on Camaro taillights, Bangle butt. Move along, nothing to see here. But a funny thing happened when we got behind the wheel of the Malibu Eco for a week. We warmed up to it.

We’ll warn you in advance: if you’re squeamish, you probably don’t want to watch the video below, especially right after lunch. If the thought of car-on-frog violence doesn’t disturb you, the video below (found on Autoblog ) is a well-played ad for the new Australian Ford Falcon EcoBoost, which is a front-engine, rear-drive family of full-size cars that we don’t get to see on this side of the planet. And before we get spam-bombed by PETA, let us just say that no actual cane toads (much less talking cane toads) were harmed in the filming of this commercial. We don’t condone running over wildlife, even if it is considered a nuisance that poses a threat to other wildlife in your part of the world. Get past the exploding toad, and there’s a valuable lesson to be learned here: never underestimate your opponent, especially when you’re distracted by a friend licking secretions from his parotoid gland

Although we have yet to get our hands on the new 2012 Chevrolet Camaro ZL1, the abundance of Mustang vs. Camaro hype circulating over the internet tends to give us a virtual measuring stick without having to strap in the driver’s seat. The latest ‘virtual’ performance number to reach the interwebs is the new Camaro ZL1 burning up the quarter mile in 11.93 seconds in complete stock form. Already, skeptics and Mustang fanatics have taken to forums to dispute the 11 second quarter mile figure highly anticipating the new 2013 Shelby GT500 to annihilate the Camaro ZL1’s time. Chevrolet is this game to prove that their ZL1 is not a pushover and the video below attempts to etch that in the minds of all enthusiasts, no matter how much more horsepower (about 82 more) the new GT500 is packing. What several sources have verified about the new Camaro ZL1’s 11-second run is that the vehicle used in the test was in fact using stock Goodyear Eagle F1 Supercar G:2 tires. Chevrolet was also quick to note that using Mickey Thompson drag tires, the ZL1 was able to knock about a tenth of a second off of the 11.93 second time. Hit up the video time-slip video below followed by the press release from Chevrolet.

BMW shows off its latest M Performance accessories. Image: BMW If you’re passionate about your ride, chances are good it isn’t stock. The most afflicted among you have probably spent as much on aftermarket performance as the car cost to buy, while others are happy to change out a gearshift knob or add a deck lid spoiler. BMW is well aware of how much Americans spend to personalize their cars, so the Bavarian automaker is introducing a line of M Performance accessories for the new 2012 BMW 3 Series sedan, as well as 2011 and later 5 Series sedans. Some items, like the M Performance steering wheel, the Brembo big brake kit or the high-flow exhaust system, are functional and may actually increase your car’s performance.
It is interesting to know we live in a world where there are still people fortunate enough to have an over-abundance of time on their hands. They have so much of it they tend do something completely out of the ordinary. In the case of the folks who brought us the Ferdinand GT3 RS , a bicycle powered and custom framed Porsche 911 GT3 RS replica, comes a new creation what looks to be modeled after the Ferrari FXX (Race-prepped Enzo) dubbed the “FAHRRADI Farfalla FXX”. The name, FAHRRADI, is a combination of the German word “Fahrrad”, meaning bicycle. The new design of this “bicycle Ferrari” is actually a slight advancement over the Ferdinand GT3 RS predecessor with better ventilation and a butterfly gear mechanism for the gull-wing-type doors. You could think of this as the most environmentally friendly Supercar on the planet, which keeps you in shape at the same time. The creativity of the guys (Mimikcry) that came up with this concept have an interesting sense of humor. The video below demonstrating the new FAHRRADI FARFALLA FXX is a total mockup of the infamous Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG tunnel commercial .

How many cars are in the collection? Even Ken doesn’t know for sure, saying “about 200,” since he’s afraid to give an exact count. While the collection is heavy on Corvettes (which make up about 40% of the total), there’s something for everyone.
First introduced in 2001, the Toyota Prius has been a tremendous success in the hybrid world with segment leading sales figures of more than 2-million units sold. For 2012, Toyota is upping the ante by introducing 3-new models. The Prius C is smaller, has a higher MPG spec of 53 combined, while the new V model is larger than the standard Prius and is more versatile and comfortable. The other new model is the Plug-in with an EV only mileage rating of 15 miles at up to 62mph. If you only drive up to 15 miles a day you’ll never have to put gasoline into your Prius. The new Prius model still expresses the vehicle’s versatility meets the need of growing families, singles and couples with active lifestyles while providing the same attributes traditionally found in the Prius DNA. Despite the spaciousness of a family friendly midsize vehicle, the Prius delivers fuel economy ratings of 51mpg/city, and 48mpg/highway. The Prius brings leading-edge hybrid technology to customers who need more room and provides more cargo space than 80% of all small SUVs. The Prius emphasizes overall proportions with spaciousness and flexibility for active consumers. Comfortable interior space and good visibility have been assisted by a high seating position, ample headroom, and an impressive 38 inch couple distance, providing generous rear legroom. A low, wide-opening rear hatch reveals 34.3 cu.ft. of cargo space behind the rear seats, making it the most spacious dedicated hybrid vehicle on the market. Comfortable seating for five is specifically designed for young families. Sliding second row seats allow for easier ingress and rear-storage flexibility, with a 45-degree recline for greater comfort. The 60/40 split folding rear seats present four different seat arrangements that provide excellent usability for passengers and luggage, while a fold-flat front passenger seat back allows for extremely long cargo. Inside you are kept informed via a center-mounted instrument panel, a visually succinct, space-efficient design that is also exceptionally user-friendly and this year an optional ‘head’s-up’ display for added safety. As with other Prius models, the driving controls including the push buttons start/stop, parking switch, drive-by-wire shift toggle and driving mode buttons are right at your hands. Each of these driving control features are distinguished by silver trim. Instrument panel controls, including a single dial automatic climate control, provide an advanced look and user-friendly command. The center console is accessible from both the driver side and rear seats. The console is big enough to hold 23-CD cases, yet low enough so that lines of sight and conversation between passengers can be relaxed and natural. The console design helps make the cabin a human-friendly space, and a low-fatigue environment for long rides. A wide variety of engineered storage spaces are located throughout the cabin. These include dual glove boxes, a center console utility tray and five cupholders in large and medium sizes. Bottle holders are built into the front and rear door pockets, while most models feature an overhead storage space suitable for sunglasses. In addition to the larger main luggage compartment there are storage units built into the sides and under the cargo platform for storing equipment such as car wash items or gloves. Even a special space for umbrellas is located under the second row of seats. The rear seats fold, slide and recline. New this year is seat material call SofTex is designed for easy cleaning, resisting spills and wear in a family vehicle that could see heavy use on a daily basis. Soft to the touch, SofTex’s attributes as compared to leather and other traditional leatherette-type materials include a weight reduction of 50%, a manufacturing process with approximately 99% fewer volatile organic compounds than conventional synthetic leather, and it’s water and stain resistant. It also does not include any animal-based material. Seamlessly integrated into the new Prius are state-of-the-art electronics and enhanced connectivity features. A Bluetooth wireless connection for compatible for hands-free phone calls is standard, now improved by an automatic phone book transfer function. Also standard now is an improved automatic phone book transfer function. Also standard is a USB port that allows playing of music and video from portable audio devices, using the vehicle sound system and in-dash display screen, including full iPod integration. The standard audio system has a 6.1 inch screen and six speakers. The screen also displays energy monitor and fuel consumption data, and functions as the monitor for the integrated back-up camera and the Display Audio System. The screen also offers a new value-driven navigation system and serves as a portal for Entune. An available HD radio system enables CD sound quality for digital FM broadcasts, and has features that maximize analog and AM broadcast sound quality. The system includes HD radio with iTunes tagging for future purchase and SIRIUS satellite radio. The ‘top-of-the-line’ audio is equipped with a new seven-inch Premium HDD Navigation system with Entune and JBL speakers. This system offers a new ‘split-screen’ feature that allows for simultaneously displaying navigation and audio info and full iPod video integration. The premium system adds a new JBL GreenEdge audio system that combines an eight-channel amplifier and door mounted ‘acoustic lens’ speakers to provide a high-quality sound. The GreenEdge amplifier achieves a 66% reduction in overall mass and a 50% enhancement in sound efficiency. The GreenEdge speakers produce a higher output of sound with the same power or less consumption of conventional models. It sounds clean and loud with the windows down cruising down the road.
