Filed under: Sedan , Buick , Reviews , Luxury Badge Engineering Is Alive And Well At The New GM 2011 Buick Regal CXL - Haven't we seen this play called before? Take a well-regarded European model, tweak it for the U.S. market, slap on a badge from a beleaguered North American brand, and hope for a touchdown. Indeed, the Buick Regal conforms to what has become General Motors ' version of the spread offense. Never mind that this wasn't a winning strategy for Saturn , which tried selling various derivatives of Opel models from The General's European operations before its demise - GM is back at it with the Regal. Dredging up a name from the past is a curious move for a brand that wants to reinvent itself to appeal to a younger audience. (Even more curious is that the Regal moniker has dubious value, having been hung on all manner of mediocre and mostly badge-engineered cars over the past four decades.) Yet for all the skepticism inherent in the "new" GM going back to its old playbook, the Regal might actually be the car that makes this offense click

Filed under: Spy Photos , Sedan , Buick , GM Spy Shots: 2012 Buick Regal GS - We spy with our little eye, a camouflaged 2012 Buick Regal GS taking a group of General Motors employees out to lunch. Rather than opting for the drive-thru, this group decided to stay out of the office a bit longer and left the vehicle alone in a parking lot, and our CarPix spy photographers were ready to pounce in order to give us this good look at the sportiest Buick we've seen for eons. And sporty it shall be judging by the hardware the cameras caught. A set of heavily-bolstered Recaro seats look identical to the super grippy chairs used in the model's Opel Insignia OPC twin, and there's a six-speed manual transmission sprouting between the bolsters, further suggesting that this is no mere people hauler. The Regal is expected to borrow heavily from the OPC partsbin, and that's great thing. The OPC is motivated by a 320 horsepower, twin-turbo V6 that pushes the all-wheel drive car to 60 miles per hour from a standstill in just six seconds. In our brief experience with the Euro market car, it has an altogether more hardcore and snarlier character that should appeal to diehard enthusiasts, and it's sure to bring some performance luster back to the TriShield brand

Filed under: Crossover , Buick , Reviews The Epitome of Inconspicuous Consumption 2010 Buick Enclave CXL AWD - There was a time when Buick was the brand of choice for doctors, lawyers and politicians. Its cars were elegant enough to show success without being overt signals of wealth, they were the epitome of inconspicuous consumption. But that was a long, long time ago. Buicks of the last 30 years look like slightly disguised versions of a run-of-the-mill Chevrolet , with a bit more chrome and better seat fabrics. The Enclave can be compared to other luxury crossovers in the segment without an asterisk. Buick design went from purposely understated to flat-out dull, and the average age of the brand's buyers shot up to over 70 in the mid-2000s. If it weren't for Buick's success in China, the Trishield would have likely followed Oldsmobile into retirement. But instead of mothballing Buick for good, General Motors decided to finally give the brand what it really needed: new and exciting products.

Filed under: Sedan , Performance , Buick Buick Regal GS Concept - Click above for high-res image gallery Last week, we heard rumors that Buick had finally decided to produce the Regal GS but no official announcement came from General Motors headquarters. This morning as U.S. media gathered to drive the Regal in California, the GS officially became a reality. And while our man Michael Harley is on the launch, we also just received an email from Dayna Hart in GM communications proclaiming: "At wave 1 of our drive program for Regal we just confirmed that the Regal GS will be added to the Buick portfolio. We are not providing any additional details at this point." As the quote notes, Buick isn't sharing any other details about the GS such as timing, or what engine will be in the car. We're expecting that Buick will stick with the 2.0-liter turbocharged and direct-injected Ecotec inline-four that was listed on the spec sheet for the concept version shown at the Detroit Auto Show last January. However, now that Hyundai has announced the Sonata Turbo with 276 horsepower, we're expecting that Buick will try to ensure that the Regal GS will have more than the 255 hp announced back in January.
Filed under: Sedan , Performance , Buick , GM Buick Regal GS concept - Click above for high-res image gallery When General Motors debuted the Buick Regal GS at this year's Detroit Auto Show , they made it very clear that the car on stage, which looked production-ready, was purely a concept - nothing more. Even though the white show car with its beefed up appearance and 20-inch wheels looked like it was ready to roll (it was, after all, a rebadged Opel Insignia OPC), no final decision had been made about whether or not the automaker would actually produce the turbocharged version of the new pride-and-joy Regal sedan. Lest anyone forget, this is an important car for Buick , as it's charged with attracting a significantly younger crowd of buyers to the brand. The GS would certainly help do the trick, and now, it sounds like all systems are go for the hotter than hot Regal. The Detroit News reports that Tom Stephens, Vice Chairman of Global Product Development for GM, has confirmed that the Regal GS has been approved for production and that it could hit showrooms at some point next year. If the specs outlined for the Detroit show car are anything to go on, this means that a turbocharged 2.0-liter four will be under the hood, likely producing 255 horsepower and 295 pound-feet of torque. What's most interesting, though, is that the show car routed this power to all four wheels via a six-speed manual transmission.
