Filed under: Sedan , Chevrolet , GM , New Car Reviews Mild-Hybrid Malibu Proves Only Mildly Interesting Don't judge a book by its cover. The sentiment certainly applies to cars as well, but doubly so. Years of driving and photographing new vehicles have taught us that you can't evaluate a new model - or even judge its styling - based on photos alone, no matter how good or bad the images or the sheetmetal might seem. And you can't really know anything until you get that car off the auto show stand and out in the wild, driving it on the street in its natural habitat. We explain this because when we first spied the new 2013 Chevrolet Malibu , we didn't think much of it: Mostly carryover front fascia, grafted-on Camaro taillights, Bangle butt. Move along, nothing to see here. But a funny thing happened when we got behind the wheel of the Malibu Eco for a week. We warmed up to it.

Filed under: Budget , Sedan , Hatchback , Chevrolet , GM , New Car Reviews An Aveo By Any Other Name Is, Indeed, Sweet Whether General Motors likes it or not, the Sonic story starts in 2004, when GM decided to import a cheap, crummy little econobox from Korea. A product of its newest subsidiary, Daewoo , the Chevrolet Aveo had few charms. But it was available as a five-door hatchback, one of the few on the market at the time, and its starting sticker price was under $10,000. It was enough of a pitch that the car sold - and stuck around. Some of us actually developed a modicum of affection for the little piece of junk

Filed under: Budget , Sedan , Chevrolet , GM , New Car Reviews Is 42 MPG The Ultimate Answer To The Ultimate Question? On paper, it sounds like an enthusiast's dream. Start by trimming almost 100 pounds from the curb weight of the base Chevrolet Cruze . Then drop the optional turbocharged engine underhood, bolted to a six-speed manual transmission. Lower the suspension and mount some lightweight, forged alloy wheels. Finish it off by sticking a little spoiler on the decklid, along with a special badge. Where do we sign up? But the car we've described isn't the stuff of boy racer fantasies; it's not even a performance car at all.

Filed under: Concept Cars , Budget , Europe , Paris Motor Show , Hatchback , Chevrolet Chevrolet Cruze Hatchback - General Motors will be expanding Chevrolet of Europe's lineup by adding a five-door Cruze , and while we won't get our first look at this new hatchback for a few weeks, GM has decided to preview it early with a few pictures on the web. Sure to be one of the major draws at the Paris Motor Show in just a few weeks, the liftback ought to compete nicely with the 2012 Ford Focus five-door, but don't expect GM to offer the more functional Cruze in the United States. "Americans don't like hatchbacks," remember? Much like the Aveo RS and Buick Regal GS from this year's Detroit Auto Show , GM calls the Cruze hatchback a "show car," but in this case, that means that it's somewhere between the stages of concept and prototype. Don't expect the body to change, but we can easily see the front LED light bar and larger wheels being scrapped for the sake of cost-cutting. Chevrolet says it will begin selling the Cruze hatchback across Europe in mid-2011 and pricing will be announced closer to the model's on-sale date.

Filed under: Hybrid , Hatchback , Chevrolet , Electric Chevrolet Volt - General Motors ' recently hired vice-president for sales and marketing Joel Ewanick took the stage at the Plug-In 2010 conference in San Jose, CA today and finally revealed that the 2011 Chevrolet Volt will have a base price of $41,000 (including a $720 destination charge) before federal and state tax incentives. While GM hasn't gone as aggressive as most people had hoped on the sticker price, the real deal appears to be the $350 per month for 36 months lease. That matches the monthly payment that Nissan is charging for the Leaf EV . The effective purchase price of the Volt will be cut to $33,500 with a $7,500 federal tax credit (hence the asterisk in the title), but buyers will have to finance the $41,000 and get the credit back on their next tax return. Lease customers will have the credit factored in to their payment. The Volt lease requires a $2,500 down payment (vs $2,000 for the Leaf), but GM is including a clause in the lease contract that allows leasers to buy the car at the end of their term so that the automaker don't have another standoff with customers like it did with the all-electric EV1. Follow the jump to learn more about the Volt's price and how the order process will go, but first take our informal poll below.

Filed under: Hybrid , Hatchback , Chevrolet , Electric 2011 Chevrolet Volt - Click above for high-res image gallery During a live video webchat this afternoon, Tony DiSalle, marketing director for the Chevrolet Volt , announced the production volumes for the first two years. General Motors plans to build 10,000 Volts by the end of the 2011 calendar year, with another 30,000 units coming in 2012. There will be a relatively slow production ramp up during the first year as the automaker learns to build the Volt as well as well as picking up lessons from cars in the field. Chevrolet dealers will have to meet some minimum qualifications in order to sell the Volt. For instance, every dealer authorized to sell the Volt will have to maintain at least one demonstrator vehicle in stock so that potential customers can test drive it.

The publication lined up the Chevrolet Impala , Hyundai Sonata , Nissan Altima and Suzuki Kizashi for a four-door throw down, and by the time the dust settled, Nissan and Hyundai reigned supreme. Both the four-cylinder Altima and Sonata racked up 'Excellent' ratings from the Consumer Reports testers, but only the Altima managed to walk away with the coveted 'Recommended' badge - the Sonata is too new for CR to weigh in on the Big Hyun's reliability. Likewise, the Kizashi secured an 'Excellent' rating, though missed out on the honor of being 'Recommended' for the same reason. The same can't be said for the Chevrolet Impala.

All other car companies admire what BMW has done with the 3 Series by Making it an “affordable,” sport-luxury model that brings in huge profits and is well followed by many ( I go with my friend in is his 2004 330i for lunch every chance I get). Alpha is GM’s small rear-drive vehicle architecture and will be launching in late 2010 sedan as a smaller-than CTS Cadillac aimed squarely at the BMW 3 Series. This is where the volume is in the premium segment, both here in the U.S. and abroad. This is where most automakers bread is buttered. Cadillac simply cannot afford not to do this car and must do a coupe, convertible, and wagon variations of the car, following Mercedes-Benz and BMW

Get the new Camaro Z-28 out of your head for a minute while we introduce you to a twin turbo version of the 3.6-liter V-6, same NA V6 found in new Camaro LS and LT, unveiled at SEMA by Jay Leno. It is a certain thing that Jay Leno is a gear-head with a disposable income to support his car collecting hobby. This new Leno Camaro Concept car is further proof that Jay has a big influence in the automotive enthusiasts’ world as well as the automotive industry. GM has produced a special version of the new Camaro for Jay Leno at SEMA. The kicker about this V6 Camaro concept is that it delivers V6 fuel economy while managing the output of the Camaro SS. Camaro5.com was the first the introduce this to the online world highlighting certain performance aspects of the Leno Camaro.

“The Camry of Full-Size Sedans” With all the talk in the press about the Camry as being the best-selling mid-size sedan, not much attention is paid to the full-size version, Toyota’s flagship the Avalon. I’ve tested several Camry’s but never got the chance to drive an Avalon. The news is that the Avalon is a smooth ride, comfortable and roomy for five adults, well appointed with the latest in personal features, and very safe in the event of a collision. There are three trim levels offered including the base XL, mid-level XLS and the Limited. All trim levels come standard with the 268hp 3.8 liter V6 engine which operates smoothly and quietly. I tested the Limited which offered every kind of automotive near luxury and luxury items that I have found in other quality, full-size vehicles. This ‘Camry on steroids’ has its own styling, interior design, and shares its only engine, the 3.8 liter V6, with the ‘top-of-the-line’ Camry. The Avalon is designed and manufactured for larger families and consumers that need the extra interior and larger trunk space. What is really enjoyed about driving the Avalon was its smooth, seamless ride, thanks to its long wheelbase and suspension, around town and on the freeway. The 268hp V6 puts out plenty of power and torque to quickly move the Avalon at launch or when you need to pass slower traffic. This smooth running V6 is mated to Toyota’s 6-speed ECT-i automatic transmission. For a litter bit more excitement you can shift the transmission out of automatic mode and hold the six gears almost to redline to increase acceleration and drive it like you had a 6-speed manual

Our friends at Ultimate Factories are at it again this week, giving us a first hand view of the build process of their highly acclaimed new Camaro. It’s an 18 hour build process involving both humans and robots which is fine tuned to produce 1 brand new Camaro every MINUTE! Meticulous work is required in many aspects of this build, as they use 734 robots to perform the almost 5,000 spot welds required on each Camaro body. Also, the new Oshawa Car Paint Shop, completed in 2007, finishes an average of 150 cars an hour. This is big industry at its finest, and we are lucky to be able to see this process from beginning to end. Show airs on National Geographic at 8pm, October 15th, 2009. Check local listings for availability.
