Filed under: GM , Earnings/Financials General Motors has just announced its intent to acquire AmeriCredit Corp. According to the automaker, the move should give dealers an added finance option when it comes to putting car shoppers into a new vehicle. Since GM and GMAC parted ways back in 2006, buyers looking to purchase a car or truck from The General have faced tougher financing terms than in the past. Supposedly, the new deal with AmeriCredit will provide new opportunities for sub-prime borrowers. The total cost of the deal? A cool $3.5 billion in straight cash. GM says that putting AmeriCredit under its wing is the next logical step in moving toward an IPO , and most analysts seem to agree. The carmaker had been criticized for not having an in-house financing arm in the past, but the new move should afford the company and its dealership network an added level of financing flexibility

Filed under: Budget , China , GM While the German automakers - and Buick - mop up outrageous demand for their wares in China's major metropolitan and coastal cities, General Motors wants to be the nameplate of choice in the secondary cities and the interior. And now in conjunction with its joint-venture partners SAIC and Wuling, it has launched another nameplate: Baojun. Meaning "treasured horse," Baojun is the low-cost brand that will sell passenger cars built in China for priced in the area of $7,000 . The Baojun's sales network will be built after the car is launched, but GM hasn't let slip when that will be. The aims are lofty for the small runabout tasked with opening up another market segment, with the general manager of SAIC-GM-Wuling declaring, "We aim to surpass customer expectations by creating a brand that combines world-class quality with low ownership costs." Follow the jump for the press release on the venture.
Filed under: SUV , Crossover , GMC , Reviews 2010 GMC Terrain - Click above for high-res image gallery GMC's "Professional Grade" tagline works best when it's being used to upsell truck shoppers into Sierras instead of Chevy Silverados, but even wider mass-market success comes from snaring folks who couldn't care less about payload. And while the Yukon has its place at the table for some families, the thirsty brontosaur's broad appeal vanished with the disappearance of super-cheap gasoline. Hence, traditionally truck-focused GMC has crossed over, so to speak. The three-row Acadia was the beginning, and while the trucks are still there for those who want or need them, if you're shopping for a family car, the nice man in the tie would like to show you something different: the 2010 GMC Terrain .
Filed under: Government/Legal , Hirings/Firings/Layoffs , GM According to Automotive News (which is citing four separate yet unknown sources), General Motors is preparing to reinstate more than 580 dealers that had applied for government-mediated arbitration to keep their franchises in the United States. For those keeping track, 580 represents exactly half of the 1,160 dealerships that signed up to go through the arbitration process . These selected dealerships would potentially be reinstated outside the process of arbitration. GM will reportedly send letters to the 580-plus dealerships it has decided to reinstate, offering immediate restoration of their franchise rights, including the ability to order new vehicles. If a dealership does not receive a letter, GM has not chosen to restore its franchise rights and it will have the option to either settle with GM or enter the arbitration process if it so desires. For those dealerships that aren't successful in their quest to regain franchise rights, well...

Filed under: Hirings/Firings/Layoffs , Cadillac , GM Most agree that the majority of General Motors' recent products are easily on par with the competition in terms of design, quality and performance. And having shed much of its legacy costs in bankruptcy last year, GM should be making money on those products. However, sales of many of its newest, greatest products have languished and the blame seems to have fallen - according to Jim Hall and Peter Delorenzo - on marketing. After bankruptcy, the general managers for each division were primarily left with the responsibility for sales and marketing, and while Chevrolet and GMC have made progress in recent months, Cadillac has not. Last summer GM promoted Brian Nesbitt from the design department where he led North American styling to be Cadillac's general manager. As of this morning, not any more.

Filed under: SUV , GM , Hummer , Earnings/Financials , Off-Road Although it has been evident for some time that General Motors ' sale of its Hummer brand to Sichuan Tengzhong Heavy Industrial Machines Co., Ltd., we didn't expect for word to come down today that the negotiations are dead and the brand will be wound down. Unfortunately, judging by a press release just issued by GM, that's exactly what will be happening. According to John Smith, GM's vice president of corporate planning and alliances, "One year ago, General Motors announced that we were going to divest Hummer, as part of focusing our efforts on Chevrolet, Buick, GMC and Cadillac going forward. We have since considered a number of possibilities for Hummer along the way, and we are disappointed that the deal with Tengzhong could not be completed." As we learned from the Saab sale saga, GM announcing that the brand will be wound down does not completely extinguish hope for another buyer to slip in in the 11th hour, but it does seem highly improbable that a new party will pick up where the negotiations with China's Tengzhong left off. In the statement available after the jump , GM does not specify what killed the planned sale of the brand, but rumors in recent months suggested that the Chinese government was not keen to sign off on the deal. At the moment, it is unclear what will happen to Hummer's H2 and H3/H3T models, but it is likely that the tooling and manufacturing rights will be sold off to other companies.

Filed under: GM , Saab , Earnings/Financials , Spyker 2011 Saab 9-5 - Click above for high-res image gallery After a Mullholland's worth of twists and turns, the sale of Saab Automobile AB to Spyker Cars is complete. The official transfer of ownership from General Motors to the Dutch supercar concern occurred earlier today, and now Saab will get down to the difficult business of becoming profitable. According to Victor Muller, CEO of Spyker Cars, a man who is fast becoming something of a folk hero in Sweden: "Through this acquisition we add approximately 15 euros per share in equity and 60 euros of assets. With a well funded business plan in place we are looking forward to working with Saab's management on the realization of that plan and bringing exciting new products to our customers. Real Saabs, Saab Saabs." With a compelling new 9-5 waiting in the wings and a raft of vehicles ( 9-3X , 9-4 ) just around the bend, the Swedish automaker's short-term future looks bright, but even before those new products have run their course, the real battle for sustained profitability will begin, with Saab likely needing to partner with a larger automaker to share development costs for new models. As it is, the rumormill has been rife with return-to-form scuttlebutt, including the return of a five-door hatchback bodystyle for the next-gen 9-3 and the possibility of a '50s-era teardrop-inspired 9-2 model that would seem to jibe with Muller's "Real Saab, Saab Saabs" comment. Will the promise of such models be enough to see the Griffin rise triumphantly from the ashes?

The 2010 Nissan Maxima still stands tall as Nissan’s flagship sedan entering into the performance and luxury segment as the infamous 4-door sports car. A 290hp 3.5-liter VQ series V6 engine delivering power to the front wheels through a CVT transmission does not make the new Maxima “soft” by any means. It is firmly planted and means business. The new styling of the Maxima introduced in 2009 adds a boldness appeal that gets some design cues from its beastly brother, the Nissan GT-R. Nissan is known for solid drivetrains and the new Maxima does not sway from that tradition.

Filed under: Hirings/Firings/Layoffs , GM , Earnings/Financials While early rumors suggested that this morning's surprise news conference at General Motors' Renaissance Center might be to confirm the sale of Saab to Spyker, the big news emanating from the company's Detroit headquarters is that Ed Whitacre Jr. is scrubbing 'interim' from his door plaque and instead taking the title of permanent CEO. The 68 year-old Whitacre has been on the job since December 1, bringing his experience as a past CEO of AT&T to bear on the troubled automaker following the removal "stepping down" of GM's CEO Fritz Henderson . Since he's taken the reins, Whitacre has made bold timetable pronouncements about the company's ability to begin repaying government loans following GM's bankruptcy, he's hired a new chief financial officer, consolidated the company's North American sales and marketing channels , and fired several brand managers. During the press conference, Whitacre also updated the assembled media on other aspects of The General's business, including the Saab situation (still in talks with Spyker, no deal yet) as well as plans to pay back the U.S. and Canadian government loans by June

There are many small hidden players in the automotive industry that few outsiders never hear of, even though they make huge contributions to it. Gearhead Performance Group (GPG) is one of those rarely heard of, which has unveiled designs for a new Pontiac Trans Am concept based on the new 2010 Chevrolet Camaro. Fashioned after the original Camaro-based Pontiac Trans AM from 1971, the new design has been in development for the past several years and is now ready to be ordered. The modern version comes with a LS9 engine like the one found in the Corvette ZR1 except the Trans AM has a pair of twin-turbochargers bolted on instead of the standard ZR-1 supercharger.

With its introduction in 2009 as a midsize performance coupe with a standard 4.2 liter V8 engine, the S5 coupe turned on many coupe enthusiasts and auto journalists with the cutting-edge styling, V8 power and interior amenities. Also, the all-new 2009 S5 coupe went against the trend of manufacturing smaller cars to help with the rising price of fuel. This year Audi chops the top off the S5 and replaces the 4.2 liter V8 with a 3.0 liter twin intercooled supercharger unit backed up with the new 7-speed S-Tronic automatic transmission. This strategy works because the new engine gives 20% better overall fuel mileage yet makes the same 325lb.ft. of torque as the larger V8 engine. The supercharger also generates more low-end torque enabling the S5 cabriolet to match the 0-60mph time of just 5.2sec. You can still get the V8 if you want but it is only available in the S5 coupe. This convertible model is something very special and unique. With just a push of the chrome-tipped toggle switch on the center console the stunning red cloth top raises or lowers in just 15sec., the fastest of any convertible in the segment, and it is also as quiet as the coupe because of Audi’s outstanding acoustic sound-insulating technology. After driving seven days behind the wheel with the top up, it does block out much of the outside noise. Also exclusive to the S5 soft top is the split rear folding seats with automatic controls in the trunk to quick lower each rear seat back to increase storage space with the top up or down. Finally, when the engine is turned on or in accessory mode, the seat belt is automatically extended 6in. out of its keeper to make grabbing it more convenience and safer. Another industry first! When the top is down and you want less wind noise you can easily attach the standard wind blocker. The Audi signature dynamic five link independent front suspension and multi-link rear suspension is slightly less sport-tuned than the S5 coupe because of the heavier weight of the convertible top, but it handles just fine getting around slower city traffic or on the open road. Put the 7-speed automatic in S (sport) mode and the suspension tightens, the gear changes come faster and the Servotronic speed sensitive steering reaction quickens to your inputs. The Quattro AWD system has also been enhanced with the new rear torque bias. It is fantastic! You are truly riding on rails as the S5 convertible just sticks like glue on the pavement

Filed under: SUV , Marketing/Advertising , Chrysler , Dodge According to an Autoblog source, Dodge will abandon the Durango nameplate for the model's replacement due for 2012. In place of that two-generation designator, Chrysler is exhuming the Magnum nameplate, a moniker used on the low-slung wagon built on Chrysler's LX platform up until 2008. The new Magnum is expected to be built atop the 2011 Jeep Grand Cherokee chassis (itself riding on Mercedes-Benz -derived architecture) and skew more toward the crossover segment than the previous rough-and-ready SUV. Our source originally showed us a screen capture of a Pentastar service training software page on its Chrysler Academy Learning Center confirming the Magnum's existence (shown above), but at that time, he wasn't clear what the vehicle was.

The Buick Regal GS is a lightly disguised concept car. It is a stick-shift sedan that reaches 60 mph in less than six seconds. The GS, short for Grand Sport, was a badge worn by Buick’s muscle cars in the ’60s and ’70s. My favorite Buick was the 87 GNX. Never knew you could get a V6 to do such beautiful things
