Filed under: Budget , Hatchback , Kia , New Car Reviews A 5-Door That Looks Good, Lacks Refinement Two things have developed in the last decade: The compact segment has finally spawned vehicles we want to drive and Kia is no longer an automotive punchline. So why, when listing off top-notch C-segment vehicles like the Ford Focus , Chevrolet Cruze , Volkswagen Jetta , Honda Civic and Hyundai Elantra , does the Kia Forte rarely make the cut? It's packing everything compact buyers are looking for, including a fuel efficient drivetrain and loads of tech and amenities that used to be reserved for far pricier models - just like the rest of the pack. What's more, it's available in five-door form and can carry an MSRP that's over $1,000 less than the competition. So why no love for the Forte? We spent a week with the new-for-2011 Forte SX 5-Door to find out. Continue reading 2011 Kia Forte 5-Door 2011 Kia Forte 5-Door originally appeared on Autoblog on Thu, 08 Sep 2011 11:57:00 EST.
Filed under: Budget , Hatchback , Kia , New Car Reviews Front Runner Improves On All Fronts The Kia Soul certainly didn't need a refresh. With more than 10,000 units flying out of showrooms each month and a growing list of awards and accolades under its belt, the Korean automaker's boxiest compact is a success story regardless of the angle. Yet, after just two model years, Kia has invested significantly in its little four-door. Emerging at the 2011 New York Auto Show earlier this year was this considerably updated 2012 Soul sporting a freshened look, innovative new technology and two new powertrains. These aren't maneuvers from an automaker scrambling to play catch-up

Filed under: Car Buying , Budget , Sedan , Chevrolet , Ford , Honda , Hyundai , Kia , Mazda , Toyota , Volkswagen , Reviews 2012 Hyundai Elantra - With a raft of newly redesigned compact sedans hitting the streets this year, Motor Trend decided it was high time to crown a new king among the diminutive four-door masses . The editors gathered eight of the most popular models in the segment and pitted them against each other, battle royale style. The magazine started by selecting the three best-selling Japanese compact sedans, the Toyota Corolla , Honda Civic and Mazda3 , which, combined, accounted for 700,000 sales last year amid fears fostered by a weakened economy. Those were joined by America's two best sellers, the Ford Focus and Chevrolet Cruze . Korea added the Kia Forte and the Hyundai Elantra , and the Volkswagen Jetta TDI from Germany rounded out the list. MT tried to get the cars as closely matched as possible; all the cars were front-drive, four-cylinder automatics with alloy wheels and stability control, all stickering somewhere in the low-$20,000 range

Filed under: Budget , Crossover , Kia , Reviews Another Korean Competitor That Beats Expectations 2011 Kia Sportage - Kia likes to say it has the Power to Surprise. Back in the day (oh, five or so years ago...), the Korean automaker's customers were supposed to be pleasantly surprised that their new car, crossover or SUV was a better vehicle than expected. Perhaps you've heard the drill: "I bought it because it was cheap... and you know, it's really not that bad." These days, though, being less mediocre than expected simply isn't good enough. See not-so-(inter)stellar brands Saturn and Mercury for proof thereof. In other words, each new Kia has to be completely on-target and every bit as good as its competitors from America and Japan - and judging by the ambitions of its corporate partner, Hyundai , you might even be inclined to include Germany on that list.

Filed under: Crossover , Hyundai , First Drive , Reviews 2011 Kia Sportage - click above for high-res image gallery The crossover is the high-fructose corn syrup of the automotive world. Think about it: Rather than using real sugar, Pepsi opts for a cheaper, highly refined and processed sweetener. Which, according to lots of studies, is pretty bad for us. Why would they do that? Higher profits, pure and simple. Likewise, CUVs offer all of the space of a comparably long station wagon or hatchback, get inferior mileage, don't handle as well, take longer to stop and in most cases offer none of the utility of a true off-roader. But guess what? They pull in fistfuls of greenbacks for auto companies. Like high-fructose corn syrup then, car experts ("Hi, Mom!") can scream out their lungs until they're blue about the benefits of a more sensible, safer, smarter product (again, wagons).

Everyone wants to have an entry into the luxury sports sedan segment these days including, you would never guess, Kia! Yes, that’s right; Kia has introduced sketches of their upcoming Kia K9 luxury sedan. The counterparts rumored to be a part of this upcoming Korean luxury sports sedan are shared with the Hyundai Genesis sedan. The Kia K9 would virtually be a sister car to that of the Genesis Sedan sporting a V8. Would that put a Kia up against the likings of an Audi A8 and BMW 7-series? Only time will tell.

Love it or hate it, this is really it, the new 2011 Hyundai Sonata. We have witnessed several renditions of what the new Hyundai Sonata would look like and some of them were not off by far. The new stylish design resembles that of a VW Passat CC or even the Benz CLS with roof lines that mimic a coupe. Visually the car looks totally different from one end to the other. Hyundai is no longer the “el-cheapo” car from Korea (same goes for the sister nameplate Kia), it is the one that gives Toyota’s Camry and Honda’s Accord a run for their money in more ways than just the 10-year powertrain warranty. The 2011 Hyundai Sonata does not just go up against the normal run-of-the-mill Camry or Accord
