BMW has jumped into the Super Bowl Commercial Game to score big with about 6 spots advertising the new 3 Series. Many of them are focused on new features offered on the new BMW 3 Series and the idea of BMW building only one thing, The Ultimate Driving Machine. These commercials are pretty clever and are sure to give other automotive ads a run for the money during Super Bowl XLVI. Enjoy!

For a decade, Nissan has been leading the path for crossover SUV vehicles. By expanding the crossover line with new vehicles such as the Rogue, Nissan has managed to provide consumers with a more efficient and economical alternative in a massively competitive segment. The new 2012 Nissan Rogue, continuing its versatile platform based off of the Nissan Sentra, gives drivers crisp handling and sporty characteristics in a 5-passenger compact crossover package. The Nissan Rogue, first introduced as a 2008 model, receives some additional refinement and features set for the 2012 model year. The new 2012 Rogue adds an optional Special Edition trim package and a 360-degree camera view in place of the single standard back-up camera. The new 360-degree camera view is just like Nissan’s and Infiniti’s infamous around-view monitor system.

Volkswagen was one of the first automakers to release a teaser video for its upcoming Super Bowl ad, and we couldn’t see how dogs barking the Imperial March from Star Wars had anything to do with selling VWs. Sure, its Darth Vader spot was the unexpected hit of last year’s Super Bowl, but going back to the same well for inspiration two years in a row rarely works well. The good news is that VW’s actual big game ad doesn’t feature dogs barking in harmony, and the Star Wars connection comes from out in left field. Yes, there’s a dog (who takes inspiration from the all new VW Turbo Beetle), and there’s even a scaled-down Darth Vader. We’re not sure if that works for two years in a row; in fact, we’re not even sure if the ad works at all. It seems to us that VW spent a serious amount of money on licensing for licensing sake. Last year’s Star Wars tie-in was funny, since most of us could picture doing something similar when we were kids. This year the connection just isn’t there, and the whole intergalactic cantina scene really doesn’t add to the video. Maybe we’ve just seen one too many Super Bowl car ads this year, and we need a fresh perspective

This weekend was the 50th anniversary running of the Rolex 24 at Daytona , and the race brought out an incredible assortment of talent to compete in both the Daytona Prototype and GT classes. It was a “who’s who” of international road racing, and Speed TV deserves credit for its non-stop coverage of the event. There was another, lesser-known race over the weekend, which pitted both amateur and pro rally drivers against one another in some of the worst imaginable conditions. The Rally America series kicked off its 2012 season this weekend, with the 38th annual Sno*Drift rally in Atlanta, Michigan. Conditions were treacherous, with road surfaces ranging from gravel to glare ice. Since the Rally America series doesn’t allow studded snow tires, the race was more about smoothness and driving style than it was about horsepower. David Higgins and co-driver Craig Drew took the win for Subaru Rally Team USA, followed by the Rockstar Energy team of Antoine L’Estage and Nathalie Richard. For the first time in series’ history, the event was streamed live over the Rally America website , and the series even used night vision cameras to capture the in-the-dark stages

It’s a well known fact that our neighbors north of the border have very little sense of humor when it comes to street racing. In fact, those of us in the country to the south would have concerns about even passing another car on a Canadian highway, lest we be stopped for racing, or worse, “stunt driving.” Apparently that’s a problem for taxis in Toronto, too, and a pair of drivers recently found themselves on the wrong side of the law. As Autoblog , via Autoblog Canada , reports, the two cabbies were pulled over for “stunt driving” down Toronto’s Younge Street, which has the distinction of being the longest street in Canada. As you’d guess, Younge Street once had a reputation for being a street racer’s paradise, as least when it wasn’t snow-packed. Stunt driving comes with a seven-day license suspension and allows police to impound the vehicles involved. We’re sure the cab companies have already gotten their property back, but we’re less sure about the job security of the drivers involved in the incident. We don’t condone street racing, especially on pedestrian-clogged avenues. However, we’ve spent plenty of time in the back seat of NYC taxis and lived to tell about it. If you want to see stunt driving, climb into the back of a New York City cab at rush hour, and tell the driver there’s a $20 tip if he can get you cross town in fifteen minutes or less.

The SSC Ultimate Aero. Image: SSC Even for those of us in the business, it occasionally got confusing: there was Shelby, which was really Shelby American, and there was Shelby SuperCars, which had nothing to do with Shelby. Shelby American, located in Nevada, builds fast-but-pricey Mustangs and continuation Cobras with Carroll Shelby’s stamp of approval. Shelby SuperCars, located in Washington, builds the SSC Ultimate Aero, the cars that (briefly) took fastest-car-in-the-world honors away from the Bugatti Veyron. Shelby SuperCars was founded by Jerod Shelby, who shares no lineage with Carroll Shelby.

When it comes to Super Bowl advertising, we thought we’d seen it all. Last year, we had Kia giving us aliens, Mayans and even a dash of Poseidon, while Volkswagen shamelessly ripped off George Lucas (after paying him handsomely, we’re sure). This year, Kia has supermodel Adriana Lima, Chevy has a berserk college student, Lexus has a caged GS and Audi has… vampires. I’d say the vampire meme is played out, but it’s way beyond played out. In fact, it’s played out, buried, dug up, killed with a stake through its heart and buried again. Then it’s dug up and cremated. Does anyone other than 16 year-old-girls and drug-addled goths even think about vampires these days

A matte black, bespoke Rolls-Royce Ghost. Image: Rolls-Royce In 2005, the sales rate for cars built under Rolls-Royce’s bespoke personalization program was only impressive in certain market segments. Customers in the Middle East wanted personalized cars, so 75 percent of 2005 Phantom models sold in the region were built as bespoke models. North American buyers, however, seemed indifferent to the idea of a personalized Rolls-Royce, with only 30 percent choosing bespoke options. Just seven years later, it’s an entirely different picture, with 99 percent of Phantoms sold in the Middle East built as bespoke rides. The North American participation rate is now 84 percent, which is still less than Europe (89 percent) but greater than Asia Pacific, including China (79 percent). Even the entry-level Ghost models, which start at a mere quarter-million dollars, offer bespoke customization, and last year some 56 percent of Ghost buyers opted for custom options

We love racing, in almost all of its forms. On any given Sunday from March through November, you’ll find us glued to our TV sets, watching F1 or IndyCar, and when that’s not on we’ll switch to Grand Am or American LeMans. When we can find it, we’ll watch WRC and DTM, too; in fact, we’ll watch just about everything except stock car racing. With no disrespect meant to NASCAR’s legions of fans, the sport just doesn’t do it for us. The cars are as “stock” as a Big Mac with a large order of fries and a super-sized Coke is healthy, and the only strategy we can see is “go fast, turn left, repeat as necessary.” Last year’s change to two-car pairing on super speedways only made things worse, since politics and luck seemed to replace skill as an essential component of victory. Maybe it would be more appealing if the cars didn’t all look alike, and if the drivers raced on their own instead of in tandem with other cars and other teams

I am a sucker for a one-off vehicle especially when the one-off is a variant of the fastest production car in the world. Bugatti will introduce yet another version of their Veyron, the Bugatti Veyron Grand Sport Special Edition at the 2012 Qatar Motor Show. This is “special” Veyron, to “honor the very important Middle East market”, features a two-tone scheme with yellow paint and black carbon fiber. The wheels are also painted black to match the carbon fiber while the interior is customized with yellow-colored leather and black stitching. The Veyron Grand Sport remains to be the fastest and most luxurious open-top car around. Bugatti will finish the current Veyron lineup with 105 available Grand Sport units for around $1.8 million each while production for the Veyron Coupe has ended.

Saab’s bankruptcy has hit parent company Swedish Automobile (Swan) hard. Expenses related to the bankruptcy have left Swan with liquidity problems, and its now faced with the prospects of selling its supercar brand, Spyker, or shuttering the operation entirely. As Left Lane News tells us, the deal to sell Spyker to Connecticut-based North Street Capital has fallen apart, leaving Swan scrambling to find a new buyer. Swan CEO Victor Muller says that a new deal to sell Spyker is “in progress,” but the departure of three members of Swan’s supervisory board seems to indicate otherwise. All three stepped down due to “differences of opinion” with Muller on funding alternatives for Swan, as well as the future of both Swan and Spyker. The group’s departure leaves only Muller on the supervisory board, and Swan’s CEO insists that all options for Spyker, including obtaining new funding, remain open. Given the difficulty of finding reliable funding for mainstream brand Saab, it seems highly unlikely that anyone would sink money into a relatively obscure boutique brand like Spyker. Unless the supercar builder is sold and sold quickly, it’s fate will likely be the same as Saab’s.

Volkswagen already made a hit during last year’s Superbowl with a commercial that will potentially go in the history books as one of the best automotive Superbowl commercials. For this year, Volkswagen does not plan to stop the momentum built up from last year’s clever Star Wars-themed commercial . VW has released what is an obvious hint towards what we should expect from them during the Superbowl XLVI’s commercial lineup continuing the same theme. Only this time, they have gone to the “Barkside”. Check out the teaser video below. Enjoy!

Just when you thought that the sad ending of Saab was finally done, it looks like some of the brand’s GM-influenced models will be reborn under the Beijing Automotive Industry brand. Three models, including one based on the former Saab 9-5 and two based on the former 9-3, are expected to be exhibited at next April’s Beijing Motor Show. Left Lane News tells us that Beijing Automotive’s range will include two sedans and a compact SUV, all of which will use Saab’s old platforms. Since the Chinese company doesn’t also own the rights to Saab’s exterior styling, expect the cars to look a bit different than their former Swedish cousins did. Like most things that went wrong with Saab, GM is ultimately to blame for this, too. When GM was trying to sell off Saab in 2009, it was Beijing Automotive that stepped up to buy the rights to select Saab platforms, engines and transmissions. The deal ultimately kept Saab afloat until Spyker stepped in to buy the company.

The range-topping Bentley Mulsanne After years of losing money with its flagship Maybach brand, Daimler has decided to shutter its ultra-premium car line. Instead, Mercedes-Benz will step up its game with a higher-end series of S-Class models, including a range-topping Pullman variant. By Daimler’s reasoning, existing Maybach customers will be happy with an upscale S-Class, as long as it’s content-rich (and expensive). Or will they? Despite its prestige for us 99-percenters, Mercedes-Benz is still a mass-market brand with little exclusivity. Part of the appeal of brands like Maybach, Rolls-Royce or Bentley is their low production volume and relative scarcity. Bespoke manufacturing helps, too, since you can order a Rolls-Royce Phantom or Bentley Mulsanne personalized in hundreds of ways, virtually ensuring that no two cars are alike. Maybach’s customers are none to happy with Daimler about the brand being axed, too, which makes them further unlikely to hop into a customized S-Class. It’s that dissatisfaction that Bentley is hoping to capitalize on: per Automotive News (subscription required), the British automaker is actively targeting Maybach owners with a personalized letter from its CEO, Wolfgang Durheimer.

You cannot make much of a convincing argument in saying that the old Acura NSX is not a sexy sports car. With that said, we dare to ask the question: Is the new Acura NSX Concept car at-all sexy or appealing? Some enthusiasts will bring up the fact that the new Acura NSX boasts a hybrid drivetrain and that ends the discussion right there. Others will let the new design marinate with a future possibility of allowing the new Acura NSX to satisfy their appetite for what the NSX was (and still is) known for. Quite possibly the new Acura NSX Concept Gran Turismo 5 (Polyphony) Promo video below will change some people’s minds… somewhat doubtful, but there is always hope in all-things sinful. Enjoy!

“Moby Dick” is considered a classic piece of American literature. Written by Herman Melville, it tells the tale of Captain Ahab, a whaler obsessed with harpooning a great white whale called “Moby Dick.” On a deeper level, it’s a tale about man’s struggle with the universe, and against forces beyond his control. Audi’s latest ads are a parody of Melville’s classic, complete with an obsessed tow-truck driver named, you guessed it, Ahab. Replace an albino sperm whale with a white A6 quattro, substitute snowbound roads for the high seas, and you get the setting for Audi’s latest pitch. Expect to see these ads in rotation during the NFL playoffs, and they’re backed by banner and video ads on skiing sites, weather sites and automotive enthusiast sites.

Upscale British brands Bentley and Rolls Royce are both owned by the Germans, with Bentley under VW’s brand and Rolls under BMW’s. Lotus has been owned by Malaysian automaker Proton for some 16 years, but has never managed to turn a profit for its parent company.
Chris Harris commits spare tirecide. When you equip the Mercedes-Benz C63 AMG with the available Performance Package, the car sends some 480 horsepower to the rear wheels. Even when those rear wheels are shod with sticky, 255 millimeter-wide tires, traction is a potential challenge. Leaving the electro-nannies on is a good idea for street driving, and it’s probably in order for less-than-experienced drivers on the track, too. What if you replaced those rear tires with 125 millimeter temporary spare tires? In fact, what if you replaced all four wheels and tires with temporary spares, then let an experienced motojournalist like Evo’s Chris Harris loose on a racetrack? The combination would either be a recipe for big fun, or a recipe for disaster, depending upon your perspective
