The 2012 VW Passat As an auto journalist, one of the perks of the job is a free new car, delivered to your door, each week. In exchange for this consideration, manufacturers want us to write objective reviews about their latest wares, emphasizing the things we liked more than the things we didn’t. That’s not to say that we won’t call out a car company for things that need fixing; instead, it’s more of an unwritten understanding that we won’t bash a particular brand because of personal bias or past quality issues. Occasionally, we get cars that are pre-production models, which usually don’t have the same build quality (and in some cases, features) as a production car. When these cars are cycled through company engineers and press fleets, they’re sent to the crusher since pre-production models can’t be sold to the public. I’ve driven a few pre-production models that had some noticeable issues, but these were corrected by the time the car hit production. In other words, I’ve driven a few “worst case” examples, but I’ve never driven a car that was built as a “ringer,” with a higher emphasis on quality than production models. Consumer Reports , who tends to have its own biases, is now questioning whether or not Volkswagen built “ringer” Passat sedans for the press fleet, and by way of example cites the use of plastic covers on the trunk hinges.

In Suzuki’s quest to fit into the automotive industry of mainstream America, the new 2011 Suzuki Kizashi Sport is an honest attempt. With sales of the Kizashi only making it to more than 6,100 people last year, the Kizashi is a midsized sedan somewhat overlooked by many. Newly refreshed for 2011, the new Suzuki Kizashi is not a bad looking car by any stretch of the imagination. As far as I am concerned, the looks of the car has nothing to do with the mediocre sales figures when compared to your Toyota Camrys or Honda Accords. Let’s face it, when you mention the name ‘Kizashi’ a car is not the first thing, (or second thing for that matter), to pop in the average Joe’s head. But then again, will the average Joe actually visit his local Suzuki dealership to test drive a new Kizashi? When was the last time you saw a Suzuki dealership that did not exclusively sell motorcycles or sport bikes? The new 2011 Suzuki Kizashi reminds me of the VW Jetta that we miss from previous generations.
