If someone were to ask us what’s going on with GM’s marketing and advertising these days, our honest answer would have to be, “we have no idea.” A few years back the automaker played musical chairs with its ad agencies for Chevrolet, kicking long term partner Campbell Ewald to the curb. Next came Publicis, who lasted about a month, before the Chevy account was handed off to Goodby, Silverstein & Partners, who still (more or less) has the business under the new name Commonwealth. We’d argue that Goodby’s advertising tagline, “Chevy Runs Deep,” may be the worst pitch line in the history of the automobile, and we’re far from alone in our belief. Despite public criticism, GM’s chief marketing officer Joel Ewanick seems happy with the slogan, which doesn’t appear to be going anywhere. A few weeks back, GM announced it would pull its advertising from Facebook, which it deemed as “ineffective.” Ford was quick to point out that Facebook advertising worked fine for them, as part of a multi-layered campaign to attract the all-important Millennial buyer. Now comes word that GM is pulling out of Super Bowl advertising, too, which it deems as “not cost effective” because of rising air time costs. A single 30-second ad can sell for as much as $3.8 million for airtime alone, and that cost isn’t expected to drop for future games. The Wall Street Journal quotes Joel Ewanick as saying, “It’s just getting too expensive and we’re not just going to do the same thing every year.” We doubt that Volkswagen feels the same way, and we’re pretty sure that Kia is happy with the results of its Super Bowl advertising. It helps if you create ads that don’t suck, and both the VW and Kia ads were far more upbeat than Chevy’s end-of-the-world Silverado ad seen here

‘ADDING THRILLS TO ITS SAFETY HERITAGE’ When you think of Volvo you think of its great safety record-solid and strong. With the new Volvo C30 T5 R-Design ‘Polestar’ edition you can add a thrilling and exciting ride with great sport coupe aggressive looks and a comfortable, sports car inspired cabin. The new C30 T5 R-Design ‘Polestar’ is now about attitude and it comes with the looks and performance to back it up. Last year Volvo designers gave the C30 an all-new front with a radically altered fascia, fenders, trapezoidal headlights and honeycomb grille wearing an enlarged Volvo iron mark. Along with the angled lines from the front bumper, the headlight style reinforces the impression of speed and sport. The contours of the muscular rear bumper were made curvier, more dynamic with a spoiler mounted to the top of the glass liftgate and uniquely styled diffuser with wide, dual chrome-tipped exhaust tips. The ten piece aero kit gives the overall look an even more aggressive stance and further lowers the center of gravity increasing its already great handling capabilities. Moving the new C30 T5 R-Design ‘Polestar’ is Volvo’s 2.5 liter, all-aluminum, continuous variable valve time with variable intake timing, turbocharged, 5-cylinder engine that generates 227hp at 5,000rpm and 236lb.ft. of torque at 1,500-5,000rpm. The potent engine is mated to a standard, smooth shifting short throw six-speed manual or an optional five-speed ‘Geartronic’ automatic with Auto-Stick sequential gearbox turning the front wheels. I tested the six-speed and found it to be fun and easy to change gears, up or down, making the ride even more fun, easy and exciting to drive. Thanks to its compact size and clever aero design, the Volvo C30 T5 R-Design ‘Polestar’ is as fun to drive as it is to admire. I couldn’t believe how many people came over to me when getting out of or into the car when parked to ask who the automaker was and when I told them it was a Volvo they couldn’t believe me until they noticed the Volvo marque on the front grille. Its generous front and rear tracks and a relatively long wheelbase contribute to inspiring and stable driving characteristics. The chassis, with MacPherson front suspension and a multi-link rear axle, is optimized to provide outstanding control and precise response to my inputs, and it really does. The tubular strut tower brace only adds to the road hugging capabilities

The 2013 Lexus GS 35- F Sport. Image: Lexus Lexus has announced a voluntary safety recall for one of its latest models, the 2013 GS 350 F Sport. As the car has only recently begun shipping, the total distributed population of the model is relatively low, and only some 650 units are affected by the recall. As Motor Authority points out, the issue is the control unit behind the Variable Gear Ratio Steering. A programming defect can cause the steering wheel to become off-centered when the car is parked with the steering wheel turned, then immediately restarted. Lexus is unaware of any accidents or injuries related to this defect, which will be corrected with a reflash of the control unit responsible for the car’s electronic Variable Gear Ratio Steering. Owners will be notified by Lexus beginning in June, but those with questions or concerns can reach Lexus’ customer service at (800) 255-3987. Announced with much fanfare during this year’s Super Bowl, the 2013 Lexus GS 350 F Sport is the luxury automaker’s attempt to broaden its sport-sedan offerings

When it comes to having a lot of time on your hands, not many can compare to Fernando (Sheepo) who occupies himself by building some of the most interesting Lego vehicles. Fernando doesn’t just build small-scale Lego cars, this guy takes his builds to the next level by turning them into fully functional remote control Lego cars and trucks. One of his latest projects, a Land Rover Defender 110, is probably the most amazing Lego creation I have ever seen on a small scale. For Fernando, the Land Rover is a supercar, as he explains on his Sheepo’s Garage blog . The Lego truck, among his other projects, is built from original Legos but has a fully functional radio control system with gears, disc brakes and a running engine to boot. I welcome you to check out Fernando’s site where he posts about other Lego vehicles he has constructed such as a Porsche 911 Cab, Mini Cooper, Dodge Viper and Bugatti Veyron. His attention to detail in the realm of what you can do with Legos is simply astonishing. He has even entered the vehicles into competitions and of course walked away with a victory.

The 2013 BMW 135is coupe. Image: BMW AG BMW’s 1 Series M is heading out of production, and (as far as we know) all inventory has already been spoken for. If you missed your chance to buy one, BMW will soon offer you the next best thing: the 2013 135is. Available in both coupe and convertible flavors, the 135is comes with a TwinPower Turbo 3.0-liter inline-six, good for 320 horsepower and 317 pound-feet of torque. A performance exhaust system ensures that the car sounds good, too, and a larger capacity radiator should be able to handle the stress of summer track days. Buyers can choose from a six-speed manual transmission or BMW’s seven-speed dual-clutch gearbox, ensuring that the 135is has broader appeal than the 1 Series M. The 2013 BMW 135is convertible. Image: BMW AG Underneath, the 135is gets a sport suspension, although we’re pretty sure it won’t allow the same cornering speeds as the M-designed suspension on the 1 Series M.

Porsche's latest Boxster. Image: Porsche AG When it comes to reports about future models from Porsche, here’s a bit of free advice: believe about half of what you hear. Earlier this year, sources reported that Porsche had stopped work on an entry-level sports car that was to slot in below the Boxster. Why? Because the sales gains wouldn’t offset the dilution of the brand, and because Porsche (at that moment, anyway) had its eyes on higher-end, higher-performance models with larger profit margins. Fast forward to March, when Porsche insisted that the sub-Boxster, code named the 551, was very much alive but possibly delayed for a “new generation” of buyers. Now comes word from Automotive News (subscription required) that plans for an entry-level roadster have been scrapped in fear of alienating traditional Porsche customers

Earlier this past weekend, a horrific crash between a rare Ferrari 599 GTO and a taxi cab claimed three lives . The accident took place on an intersection where the Ferrari allegedly ran a traffic light with excessive speed crashing into a taxi cab full of passengers. The unfortunate circumstances of this accident bring about a harsh reality of those who fail to obey the rules of the road. Just recently, a video of this incident taking place was posted online from the dashboard cam of some very lucky individuals crossing the same intersection. Our thoughts and prayers go out to the families of the three individuals who died as a result of this dreadful crash. Please people, be safe out there.

We’ll admit to having a bad infatuation with the new BMW M135i. We like it’s lines far better than the 1 Series M coupe’s, and it’s hatchback practicality appeals to us, too. It’s “off-limits” nature, at least in the United States, only makes it that much more alluring, since it’s human nature to want what you can’t have. The M Performance hatchbacks will come to market with a 3.0-liter inline-six engine, good for 320 horsepower in European trim. Specific details on suspension tuning are lacking, although we wouldn’t be a bit surprised if the M Performance cars were just a bit softer than the actual BMW M cars. In other words, we’d expect a 1 Series M to spank the M135i around a racetrack, but the M135i would probably be more comfortable getting there and back. BMW promises that U.S. customers will get an M Performance 1 Series of our own, but we’d be shocked if it were anything other than a coupe

Dru Diesner's 1972 Nova At first glance, Dru Diesner’s 1972 Chevy Nova isn’t a car you want to be seen in. It’s time-faded paint has gone from simply ugly to hideous, and its flanks are marred by dents and dings. The wheels are steelies with dog-dish hubcaps, sporting 1970’s chic whitewall tires that look as if they’ve come from the “any tire $5” pile. It’s so ugly that we wouldn’t even call it a rat rod; instead, it’s just plain ratty. Don’t think of the outside appearance as anything but camouflage, since under the hood lurks a twin supercharged LS2 V-8 that produces some 1,160 horsepower – at the rear wheels. We’re fairly certain that’s more than a Bugatti Veyron Supersport, which makes 1,184 horsepower at that crank, but significantly less to the wheels. Wheel to Wheel Powertrain’s Kurt Urban (now owner of Kurt Urban Performance ) built the car to be the ultimate sleeper

If you are old enough, then you remember a time when your imaginary expressions reached as far as a piece of paper and pencil. Now days, thanks photoshop and other applications from the latest Adobe software suite, someone’s imagination takes on a completely new life form. As evidence, Inside Line posted the a rendering of what could resemble the next Ford Mustang . Considering how other sources have drawn the conclusion of the 2015 Ford Mustang receiving a complete make-over to favor the new Fusion and Evos Concept, enthusiasts are not taking this news too lightly. The latest rendering, clearly not the real thing, has drawn some skepticism from die-hard Mustang enthusiasts. Some have expressed positive aspects of the design that you see here, while others carefully selected some choice 4-letter words to describe ones imaginary futuristic Mustang design. We beg to ask our readers, what do you think of Ford heading in this “new” direction for the next Mustang?

The problem with being a Jack-of-all-trades, the cliche tells us, is that you end up being a master of none. Take the Mercedes-Benz SL63 AMG for example: it needs to provide a ride soft enough to coddle buyers of an advanced age, while delivering a ride entertaining enough to attract younger buyers. It needs to function as a roadster with the top retracted, but needs to work equally well as a coupe with the top up in bad weather. Building a grand touring sports hardtop roadster is a tall order on its own, but attempting to build the best example in the world makes the task that much harder. Harris calls the new SL63 AMG a “far, far better car than the one it replaces.” It’s 275 pounds lighter than the previous model and blessed with a stiffer structure, which means fewer squeaks and rattles over uneven pavement.

The Mercedes-Benz C63 AMG Black Series Coupe If you think all Mercedes-Benz models are posh luxo-barges that coddle driver and passengers in isolated comfort, think again. The Mercedes-Benz AMG Black Series has always catered to a sightly different type of buyer, one who still wants Mercedes-Benz’s engineering expertise, but with a harder edge. Black Series cars have always been about performance and handling, not about about sheer comfort and luxury. The latest Black Series model, the C63 AMG Coupe is no exception to this rule. Output gets bumped up from 451 horsepower and 443 pound-feet of torque in the C63 AMG to 510 hp and 457 lb-ft in the Black Series coupe, enabling it to sprint from 0-60 mph in just 4.2 seconds. To make sure the Black Series corners equally well, a coilover suspension is standard and the car’s track has been widened by 1.6 inches up front and 3.1 inches in the rear. To ensure that you can rein the car in, AMG has six-piston front calipers grabbing 15.4-inch brake rotors and four-piston calipers grabbing 14.2-inch rotors out back. Inside, you’ll find a cockpit designed to lower lap times, not provide cross-country comfort. The steering wheel is wrapped in Dinamica for a sure grip, while the thickly-bolstered sport seats provide plenty of lateral support for high G-force cornering

The Lamborghini Aventador LP700-4. Image: Lamborghini If you were hoping the Lamborghini Aventador Roadster would pack a slick, power-retractable hardtop like Ferrari’s 458 Italia, it appears you’re out of luck. If reports from Italy’s Quattroroute are correct, the topless Aventador will come to market with a removable targa roof, similar to that used by Bugatti on the Veyron Grand Sport. The Aventador Roadster’s top panels will be made from carbon fiber or carbon composite, and will be split in the middle for easy removal or deployment. That may make them small enough to carry on board the Aventador, eliminating the need to decide on topless motoring before leaving the garage (like the Veyron Grand Sport, whose roof can’t be stored on board the car). As for the “why,” the answer is relatively simple: adding any kind of folding top, whether manual or powered, would add more weight and would require redesign of the Aventador’s intricate engine cover. Not only is such a redesign cost-prohibitive, but it also would added significantly to the car’s development time. Assuming, of course, that the car actually exists. Lamborghini is neither confirming nor denying a topless Aventador, which means we’ll have to wait until the international auto show schedule resumes this fall before any official announcements are made.

The new 2013 Cadillac ATS is a highly anticipated vehicle positioning General Motors in a head-to-head competitive battle with the likings of BMW’s 3 Series and even the Benz C Class. Set to hit dealership showrooms this summer, the 2013 Cadillac ATS will sport rear wheel drive, optional all-wheel-drive, 3 different engine choices and a starting price tag of $33,990, including destination charges. To remain quite competitive among enthusiasts and purists, the new 2013 Cadillac ATS will have many different trim levels and the availability of a six-speed manual transmission. Engine choices will start off with a 200 horsepower 2.5-liter 4-cylinder engine mated to a six-speed automatic transmission. The next powertrain will be a turbocharged 2.0-liter 4-cylinder, also found in the new Buick Regal GS , making 270 horsepower and paired with a 6-speed manual gearbox at a price starting at $35,795. The top-of-the-line ATS model will sport a starting price tag of $42,090 with the 3.6-liter V6 engine from the CTS making 320 horsepower coupled with an automatic transmission and the availability of all-wheel-drive. Already, the battle between the BMW 3 Series and Cadillac ATS has heated up. We won’t know how the new baby Caddy stands in terms of value when it comes to equipment because the complete list of options and packages have not been revealed. For now, knowing the powertrain levels in the new 2013 Cadillac ATS, we have a good glimpse of how this battle will at least start

It is interesting to know we live in a world where there are still people fortunate enough to have an over-abundance of time on their hands. They have so much of it they tend do something completely out of the ordinary. In the case of the folks who brought us the Ferdinand GT3 RS , a bicycle powered and custom framed Porsche 911 GT3 RS replica, comes a new creation what looks to be modeled after the Ferrari FXX (Race-prepped Enzo) dubbed the “FAHRRADI Farfalla FXX”. The name, FAHRRADI, is a combination of the German word “Fahrrad”, meaning bicycle. The new design of this “bicycle Ferrari” is actually a slight advancement over the Ferdinand GT3 RS predecessor with better ventilation and a butterfly gear mechanism for the gull-wing-type doors. You could think of this as the most environmentally friendly Supercar on the planet, which keeps you in shape at the same time. The creativity of the guys (Mimikcry) that came up with this concept have an interesting sense of humor. The video below demonstrating the new FAHRRADI FARFALLA FXX is a total mockup of the infamous Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG tunnel commercial .

Chevrolet Caprice Police Interceptor - GM Zeta Platform From recent reports, it seems Chevrolet has something up their sleeves hinting towards a new “SS” branded name potentially for an upcoming rear-wheel-drive performance sedan. We already know of a new Holden Commodore being the basis for Chevrolet’s new Caprice police interceptor , but what about a consumer version of what may be a new Chevy SS model? New repots have surfaced about the a trademark application made for the “SS” name , in addition to OnStar accidently confirming a “SS Performance” name on their Mobile App RemoteLink site. Now, the rumor mill is spinning faster than ever with new speculations from Car and Driver stating that a new Chevrolet SuperSport Sedan will have the underpinnings of the Zeta platform powered by the 6.2-liter V8 from the Camaro. Moreover, GM’s new 3.6-liter V6 engine found in the new 2012 Buick LaCrosse is rumored to be part of this new Chevy SuperSport Sedan’s lower trim levels with 320 horsepower

There are only a finite number of 1968 Camaros, in coupe or convertible form, left on the planet. Owning one generally requires careful stewardship, to preserve the car for future generations. If you want to keep it original, that means there’s very little you can do to improve the car or make it safer. If that’s the purist school of thought, there’s also the pro-touring school of thought, which says, “the old cars were the coolest, so why not do everything you can to improve performance and handling?” Enter Bob Hall, the owner of what may well be the coolest 1968 Camaro convertible on planet earth. First, that’s no stock 327 V-8 beneath the hood. Instead, Hall’s ride uses an LSA V-8 pulled from a wrecked Cadillac CTS-V. Thanks to an overdrive pulley on the stock supercharger and a custom tune, the car makes some 800 horsepower at the crank, which translates to 648 horsepower at the rear wheels. The suspension and brakes have been updated to handle the additional power, and Hall regularly drives the car in autocross competition

The 2013 Ford Shelby GT500. Image: Ford Motor Company Last November we told you that Ford would launch a revised Shelby GT500 for 2013, complete with a 650-horsepower supercharged V-8. It turns out we were a bit wrong about the Shelby’s horsepower; according to the latest information from Ford, the new Shelby GT500 will actually produce 662 horsepower and 631 pound-feet of torque, which makes the car’s 5.8-liter V-8 the most powerful production V-8 in the world. Think about that last fact for a second – the most powerful production V-8 in the world graces the engine bay of a Mustang, not a Ferrari or an Aston Martin or a Maserati. It beats the Camaro ZL1 by a significant 82 horsepower and 75 pound-feet of torque, and it even beats the Corvette ZR1 in output, at a little more than half the price (although we’re pretty sure the ZR1 will still be faster around a racetrack). If that wasn’t impressive enough on its own, the new Shelby GT500 will even avoid a gas guzzler tax rating, and actually delivers better fuel economy (by one mpg city and highway) than the car it replaces. Compared to the Camaro ZL1, the Shelby GT500 will return one more mpg around town, but a significant five mpg more on the highway. Not that any buyers shop either car for its fuel economy, of course, and driven as intended fuel economy in the single digits is likely.

Members of the Mercedes-Benz coupe family. Image: Mercedes-Benz Mercedes-Benz is perhaps best known for building luxury cars, with the occasional emphasis on sport through tuning arm AMG. While cars like its SLS AMG command a space at the upper end of the sport / grand touring coupe market, the three-pointed star has wanted a more affordable, harder-edged coupe to compete with the Porsche 911 for quite some time. Rumors of such a car have been circulating for years, with the occasional spy shot of what appears to be an SLS in 3/4 scale making the rounds. Now comes word from Britain’s Auto Express that such a car does indeed exist, and will hit the market under the SLC name. Confirmation comes from Mercedes-Benz design head Gorden Wagener, who spoke with Auto Express at this week’s Beijing Auto Show. Details are lacking, but there are several givens: the car will be priced to compete with the Porsche 911, it will offer a range of engine options (including both a V-6 and a V-8) and it will come to market wearing an AMG badge
