If someone were to ask us what’s going on with GM’s marketing and advertising these days, our honest answer would have to be, “we have no idea.” A few years back the automaker played musical chairs with its ad agencies for Chevrolet, kicking long term partner Campbell Ewald to the curb. Next came Publicis, who lasted about a month, before the Chevy account was handed off to Goodby, Silverstein & Partners, who still (more or less) has the business under the new name Commonwealth. We’d argue that Goodby’s advertising tagline, “Chevy Runs Deep,” may be the worst pitch line in the history of the automobile, and we’re far from alone in our belief. Despite public criticism, GM’s chief marketing officer Joel Ewanick seems happy with the slogan, which doesn’t appear to be going anywhere. A few weeks back, GM announced it would pull its advertising from Facebook, which it deemed as “ineffective.” Ford was quick to point out that Facebook advertising worked fine for them, as part of a multi-layered campaign to attract the all-important Millennial buyer. Now comes word that GM is pulling out of Super Bowl advertising, too, which it deems as “not cost effective” because of rising air time costs. A single 30-second ad can sell for as much as $3.8 million for airtime alone, and that cost isn’t expected to drop for future games. The Wall Street Journal quotes Joel Ewanick as saying, “It’s just getting too expensive and we’re not just going to do the same thing every year.” We doubt that Volkswagen feels the same way, and we’re pretty sure that Kia is happy with the results of its Super Bowl advertising. It helps if you create ads that don’t suck, and both the VW and Kia ads were far more upbeat than Chevy’s end-of-the-world Silverado ad seen here

Nowhere is it written that muscle cars must be ancient relics, stuffed full of carburetor-fed, hydrocarbon-belching V-8 engine and fitted with the kind of primitive suspensions usually found on farm wagons. There are plenty of muscle cars available from new car dealers, like anything with an SRT badge, the upcoming Chevy SS and the Cadillac CTS-V series. Most discussions of muscle cars don’t extend to station wagons, either, but the CTS-V wagon is equally adept at hauling groceries, hauling the family or just plain hauling ass. Unlike that Buick Roadmaster wagon your grandfather owned, the CTS-V wagon handles as well as anything with the mass of a small planet can, thanks to both its Magnetic Ride Control suspension and the electro-wizardry of stability control. On a dry track, the CTS-V is quite a bit faster than you think it will be. Throw some rain into the mix, and the weaknesses of 556 horsepower sent to two wheels only, coupled with a long wheelbase, begin to become apparent. Enter the BMW X5 M, which exists in the category of “Uber SUV” alongside rides like the Porsche Cayenne Turbo and the Jeep Grand Cherokee SRT 8. Like the CTS-V wagon, the X5 M is a lot faster than you’d expect it to be, and it’s M-tuned stability control and all-wheel-drive system don’t care much if the track is dry, wet or somewhere in between.

Filed under: Budget , Sedan , Mazda , New Car Reviews Ably Carrying The Banner For Internal Combustion Forget the Mazda CX-5 . The Mazda3 still carries the sales gravitas that the CX-5 aspires to, but for now, the C-segment sedan and hatchback that has provided eight years of sales bedrock is still the most important Mazda model. That's why, after making hay with the debut of the CX-5 crossover and its innovative Skyactiv powertrain, the tried-and-true Mazda3 was the next in line for the engine, transmission and aero-tweak hat trick that's allowed the car to claim a 40 miles per gallon highway fuel economy rating. Putting a new engine in an older car as a way to boost interest and sales isn't a new idea, of course. Sometimes it works, and other times it's not enough to re-float sales that have run aground on the sandbar of customer ennui. The Mazda3 has also consistently pleased enthusiasts, so we wanted to find out how its comportment has changed after the heart transplant.

The new 2012 Infiniti G37 Hardtop Convertible continues to offer exceptional value in a package consisting of advanced technology, performance and luxury. The new 2012 Infiniti G37 Convertible, virtually unchanged from the 2011 model year, remains to offer the versatility of a luxury sports coupe and a convertible. Placed in the ring with luxury hardtop convertibles such as the Lexus IS C, the new G37 Convertible manages to offer a slight edge in terms of a more powerful standard V6 engine combined with a 6-speed manual transmission option. As with any other hardtop convertible, the G37 gives passengers the needed isolation from road noise when compared to convertibles with a fabric top. The aluminum folding roof takes a while to fold, about 25 seconds, but is well worth the wait when you get to enjoy the open top and sporty attitude of the 325 horsepower and 267 ft. lbs. of torque 3.7-liter V6 engine. Just like my test vehicle from last year , my 2012 G37 Sport Convertible’s V6 engine was mated to a 6-speed manual transmission

‘Superb Performance, Luxury and Infotainment’ Midsize crossover sport utility vehicles continue their strong demand by consumers looking for a vehicle that they can use for many purposes-comfortably transporting up to five adults, cargo carrying flexibility, and towing capabilities for their boat, atv’s, jet skis, etc, up to 3,500 pounds. With its distinctive styling, high levels of performance, luxury, comfort infotainment inside and advanced technology inside, the new Platinum Edition is like no other crossover sport utility on the road. This new addition to the Murano nameplate is distinguished by adding standard 20 inch aluminum alloy wheels, DVD players behind the front head restraints, and Nissan’s latest Navigation system. All 2012 Murano’s feature a powerful yet fuel-efficient 260hp VQ-Series 3.5 liter, all-aluminum, DOHC V6 engine that incorporates a Twin Nissan Variable Induction Control system, microfinished camshaft and crankshaft surfaces. Diamond Like Carbon coated valve lifters, resin intake manifold, forged crankshaft, digital knock control system, high capacity mufflers round out this truly high-tech engine. It is mated to a smooth and quiet advanced Xtronic CVT transmission that is one of the best that I have ever tested. It also comes with Nissan’s Adaptive Shift Control that provides you with a sporty driving experience and the smoothness that only a CVT offers. Murano is available in standard front-wheel drive or the optional Intuitive All-Wheel Drive system, and all Murano’s come with standard Vehicle Dynamic Control (VDC) and Traction Control to help you maintain control of the vehicle when driving on the edge of adhesion in sharp turns. Murano’s sculpted exterior features a wide front end with a dynamic front fascia design and wide grille. Murano is again available with quad-cylinder style HID, bi-functional Xenon projector headlights and standard foglamps to lighten the darkness up ahead and increase your safety. The wide hood sweeps into the sculpted dynamic bodylines, with pronounced wheel arches that the Platinum’s 20X8 inch tires and wheels fill up giving it a more aggressive stance. Large chrome door handles and optional roof rails add both functionality and visual accents. Murano’s equally distinctive rear end features a unique rear glass shape that flares out, integrated rear roof spoiler and large rear LED taillights that accents the body side character lines. Dual exhaust outlets with chrome tips give the rear another aggressive look. My loaded Platinum model came with rain-sensing wipers, a power liftgate, and a large dual panel power glass moonroof with 2 nd row skylight that provided an open-air experience for the rear seat passengers. Nissan’s advanced ‘D’ platform provides a solid foundation for family adventure-style crossover duties and fun. This platform, which is similar to that used in the 2011 Altima, has been optimized for Murano using aluminum and high-strength lightweight steel. Taking advantage of the premium rigid and torsional structure is the standard four-wheel independent suspension also with an extensive use of lightweight aluminum for a reduction in unsprung weight. The suspension design features cradle-type front subframe and multi-link rear design with improved geometry and large front and rear stabilizer bar, provides increase stiffness with no noise, vibration or harshness. The suspension in combination with high performance dual flow path gas-charged shocks helps provide sure footing and increased ride comfort on rough surfaces.

Sean Kennedy, about to drive Mark Heidaker's Ford GT into the record books. The concept is pretty simple: find a straight, wide and under-utilized concrete runway, preferably as long as possible. Invite the fastest cars and bikes you can find to drop the hammer for a set distance, usually a half or full mile, and document the results. That was the recipe for success followed by last weekend’s Houston Half Mile, which builds on the success of similar events such as the Texas mile. At last Saturday’s Houston Half Mile event, Mark Heidaker’s 2,000 horsepower Ford GT (tuned by Hennessey Performance) ran 212.9 mph over the half mile with driver Sean Kennedy behind the wheel.

The Lotus Evora S at the Geneva Motor Show. Image: Lotus When Lotus’ former owner, Proton, was sold to industrial conglomerate DRB-Hicom, rumors of a pending Lotus sales jumped from simmer to full boil. After all, Lotus had never returned a profit for Proton, and the boutique sports car brand’s future plans would take serious money to see through. Throw in an aging and pinpoint-focused product mix, and it looked like the future for Lotus was anything but certain. Earlier this month Lotus received funding from DRB-Hicom to resume operations, and now Autocar (via Left Lane News ) is reporting that a Lotus sale is off the table. In the words of DRB-Hicom’s managing director Dato’ Sri Haji Hohd Khamil Bin Jamil, the company is “not thinking about a sale” of the Hethel-based brand. That’s for now, anyway, since the DRB-Hicomm head was quick to qualify that one should “never say never” in regards to spinning off the halo brand. The company’s full review of Lotus is currently underway, so it may still be months before the ultimate fate of the automaker is decided.

2007 Riviera Concept General Motors’ Buick brand has kept their behind-the-scenes development of new models pretty much out of sight as they attempt to reinvent themselves. In a recent report from GM Inside News , it has been stated that GM just trademarked the Riviera name yet again. The last time that name rung a bell was during the 2007 Shanghai Auto Show where Buick showcased a Riviera concept featuring gullwing doors and futuristic styling. The baby boomer generation remembers the Buick Riviera with a small following among new generation enthusiasts. Despite that, the Riviera name will resonate with many possibly reigniting that lust some had for Buick that really made a styling statement. 2007 Riviera Concept The 2007 Riviera Concept vehicle used the front-wheel-drive Epsilon II platform.

Cadillac's CUE iPad app. Image: © GM Corp. When Hyundai launched its upscale Equus sedan in the United States, it did so with an innovative marketing move: rather than include a paper version of the owners manual, it loaded the full document onto an Apple iPad, which was included with the purchase of the car. That lasted exactly one model year, and Equus models now come with an abbreviated owners manual and a a DVD packed with the full version. To mark the launch of its CUE (Cadillac User Experience) infotainment system in the upcoming Cadillac XTS, the luxury automaker is doing something very similar. XTS buyers will get a free iPad, but it won’t come loaded with just the car’s owner’s manual. Instead, it will contain an app that mirrors the CUE interface, allowing XTS buyers to learn the system when and where they choose. The iPad will also contain the MyCadillac app, which allows owners to locate a dealer, schedule service, read the owners manual, get reminders on parking or summon roadside assistance, and the OnStar RemoteLink app, which allows remote locking and unlocking of doors and displays the status of various vehicle systems.

Every time during our so-called gas crisis, which is simply defined as a period of higher-than-normal gas prices, smaller vehicles receive an upswing in merit and sales. One particular vehicle that attempts to keep its new-found unique distinction under all economic conditions, is the new 2012 Scion iQ, the newest and smallest subcompact to join Toyota’s Scion line of cars. Don’t mistake the new Scion iQ for anything but a Scion iQ. After all, the new iQ is more of an urban expression when pitted against other pocket sized vehicles. The new Scion iQ’s unique style, cute and endearing, will mostly appeal to teens and young adults who have yet to find their proper place in the working society. Having enough space up front for two adults, the two rear seats will rarely see occupants unless it is during one of those late night excursions of toting your tipsy buddy to their resting place for the evening. Interior quality, along with fit and finish, is about average.
