Filed under: Hybrid , Hatchback , Chevrolet , Electric Chevrolet Volt - General Motors ' recently hired vice-president for sales and marketing Joel Ewanick took the stage at the Plug-In 2010 conference in San Jose, CA today and finally revealed that the 2011 Chevrolet Volt will have a base price of $41,000 (including a $720 destination charge) before federal and state tax incentives. While GM hasn't gone as aggressive as most people had hoped on the sticker price, the real deal appears to be the $350 per month for 36 months lease. That matches the monthly payment that Nissan is charging for the Leaf EV . The effective purchase price of the Volt will be cut to $33,500 with a $7,500 federal tax credit (hence the asterisk in the title), but buyers will have to finance the $41,000 and get the credit back on their next tax return. Lease customers will have the credit factored in to their payment. The Volt lease requires a $2,500 down payment (vs $2,000 for the Leaf), but GM is including a clause in the lease contract that allows leasers to buy the car at the end of their term so that the automaker don't have another standoff with customers like it did with the all-electric EV1. Follow the jump to learn more about the Volt's price and how the order process will go, but first take our informal poll below.

Filed under: Hybrid , Hatchback , Chevrolet , Electric 2011 Chevrolet Volt - Click above for high-res image gallery During a live video webchat this afternoon, Tony DiSalle, marketing director for the Chevrolet Volt , announced the production volumes for the first two years. General Motors plans to build 10,000 Volts by the end of the 2011 calendar year, with another 30,000 units coming in 2012. There will be a relatively slow production ramp up during the first year as the automaker learns to build the Volt as well as well as picking up lessons from cars in the field. Chevrolet dealers will have to meet some minimum qualifications in order to sell the Volt. For instance, every dealer authorized to sell the Volt will have to maintain at least one demonstrator vehicle in stock so that potential customers can test drive it.

The all-new 2010 Mazda 3s 4-door Grand Touring edition offers the consumer bolder styling, more power and performance, more comfortable interior and added standard safety systems. The car is an overall sophistication that ventures beyond the sport-compact segment to rival import models costing thousands more. Realizing that the Zoom-Zoom emotional spirit is both static and dynamic, Mazda gave the new 3i a more expressive and sophisticated interior and exterior with added sportiness. New features-many of which are borrowed from the new Mazda6-are also introduced in here with the aid of exceeding constantly rising consumer expectations. Ultimately, Mazda designed and engineered a whole new Mazda3 that blends the best of the first-generation with large and small refinements in countless areas. It begins with the bold grille that is purposely polarizing. It is the new ‘face’ of Mazda

The all-new 2010 Lexus HS250h hybrid will keep more of your money in your pockets as you pass gas stations, and will also have you seated in a Lexus with all of the luxury, convenience and safety that you expect from a Lexus. The Lexus HS250h is the first luxury hybrid to achieve an EPA Estimated Rating of 35mpg combined and is the first luxury car to come standard with a supplemental restraint system with 10 airbags. Hybrid efficiency is at the core of the new HS250h and Lexus’s first four-cylinder gas engine and latest hybrid system take advantage of the company’s continuous engineering advances to maximize fuel economy, minimize emissions and deliver driving pleasure. A highly efficient engine design, an exhaust heat recovery system, major efforts to reduce parasitic losses, a new evaporative emissions system and driver-selectable driving modes all make notable contributions. Significant efforts were also made to minimize engine noise. An Atkinsion-cycle engine design was chosen for its high efficiency and compatibility with hybrid operation in the new HS. The twin-cam engine uses four-valves per cylinder and Variable Valve Time with Intelligence on the intake side. The engine is undersquare, with an 88.5mm bore diameter and 96mm stroke, and has a relatively high compression ratio of 12.5:1. Peak output equals 147hp and in combination with the hybrid drive motor, the HS generates 187 total system horsepower. That is the most of any other dedicated hybrid motor.

The Toyota 4Runner has been a staple for what we know as the SUV since 1984. The latest redesign is now Texas-Style, or big enough to roll with other mammoth trucks currently sold in the US. Not only is it bigger, but smaller in the engine compartment as Toyota will offer a 2.7-liter 4-cylinder version of the 4Runner. Added to the line-up is a Trail grade model for those hard-core off roaders, you know who you are. Toyota’s long history and experience in making one of the best truck-SUV’s around is really paying off despite Toyota’s extended line-up of eco-friendly vehicles. The 2010 Toyota 4Runner lineup starts off with an entry level 4

The all-new 2009 Audi A4 is longer, wider and lower with these sporty proportions following the new elevated driving dynamics of more power, a completely new suspension system, larger, stronger brakes, riding on new 18in. wheels and tires. The dramatic new styling and higher performance is followed inside with more front and rear head and legroom, as well as new creature comforts and safety systems. While the length and width are longer, the front overhang is shortened, and the hood and wheelbase are extended. The refocused taut design is easily seen in the coupe-like, early sloping roof line turning the entire silhouette into a flow of elegance, while dynamic lines frame and emphasize the beautiful curved sculpted surfaces. The front fascia has a new, wider and lower single-frame grille with cat’s-eye Bi-Xenon headlamps featuring an embedded wing and a new strip of white LED daytime running lights to enhance safety. The lower bumper features bigger, blacked-vanes to aid aerodynamics and stability and also house the foglamps. Below in the center is a new splitter to help better manage the air coming straight at the A4 and increase downforce

Details on the Vision EfficientDynamics Concept come out ahead of the Frankfurt Motor Show coupled with a new video. There has been a wide open speculation as far as the powerplant found in this new concept but now is known to be compromised of a plug-in hybrid system with a 3-cyl turbo-diesel engine. That astonishing factor of the equation is that BMW plans to get “M” (Motorsport) performance out of this plug-in hybrid claiming a 0-60 time of 4.8 seconds while still able to get hybrid fuel saving figures at the same time. Below is a new video and full press release of the BMW Vision EfficientDynamics Concept.
The all-new 2009 Dodge Challenger R/T Classic is a real ‘blast from the past’ with vintage flair, modern styling and engineering. It combines the original Dodge Challenger R/T styling with a new 375hp 5.7 liter HEMI V8 engine, Tremec 6-speed manual transmission, ZF-Sach’s twin disc performance clutch, rack & pinion steering with a performance gear, sport-tuned, fully independent suspension, dual exhaust, while riding on 20X8in. high-performance tires and alloy wheels. Inside is a modern, comfortable cabin with vintage accents. Dodge has taken the all-new Challenger to new heights of styling and performance. “A Blast From The Past” One look and you’ll recognize the old muscle car styling with the long raised performance hood with dual working scoops topped with the original HEMI badge at each side. The recessed egg-crate grille sports round dual headlamps, Challenger and R/T badges, a lower air-intake, a wide splitter to help keep the front end solidly planted on the pavement and functional design elements to direct air around the front end to further improve aerodynamics. From the side a bold A-line or character line runs from stem to stern and jumps over the rear wheels as on the original Challenger giving it an instant recognizable muscle car profile. Door mounted side mirrors from the original, Challenger fender badges, bold, full-length, double black side R/T graphics, and a cast metal fuel door with ‘Fuel’ is also taken from the original R/T. The rear is also reminiscent of the original with a recessed full-perimeter ‘blacked-out’ brake, backup and tail lamp clusters with a clear Dodge in the center, a full-perimeter spoiler on top of the end of the trunk lid, a straight, flat bumper and rectangular, polished stainless steel dual exhaust tips nicely spread down below. The look is as original as it can get as some people I spoke to had to make a ‘double-take’ as they thought they were looking at an original Challenger from 1971. Under the skin of the car is where modern automotive technology takes over and gives the Challenger R/T world-class power and handling capability. Under the hood lies a reworked 5.7 liter HEMI V8 utilizing Dual Variable Cam Timing, dual spark plugs, a higher compression ratio and performance-tuned dual exhaust system to increase horsepower from last year’s 340 to today’s 376hp at 5,150rpm and a massive 410lb.ft.

Today BMW announced a hybrid version of their bid-daddy sedan, the 7-Series. Due to be showcased at the Frankfurt Motor Show next month along side of the X6 ActiveHybrid, the 2010 BMW ActiveHybrid 7 will be slightly toned down from the X6 ActiveHybrid in terms of power.

Could it be that the EV race is on? Will other automotive manufacturers such as Toyota, Honda and Nissan battle it out with GM’s Chevrolet to better the new Chevy Volts claimed 230 Miles Per Gallon estimate? It would appear to be that way because according to the NissanEV’s Twitter account, the new Nissan EV will sport a 367 mpg figure which was derived using the Department of Energy formula. Funny, because the Nissan EV has no tail-pipe and does not use gasoline… so what gives? NissanEVs Twitter post: “Nissan Leaf = 367 mpg, no tailpipe, and no gas required. Oh yeah, and it’ll be affordable too!” Either way, the fight will continue as we see more and more automotive manufacturers come out of the wood-works and attempt to say they have the better MPG figure from an upcoming vehicle
