Filed under: Car Buying , Budget , Sedan , Chevrolet , Ford , Honda , Hyundai , Kia , Mazda , Toyota , Volkswagen , Reviews 2012 Hyundai Elantra - With a raft of newly redesigned compact sedans hitting the streets this year, Motor Trend decided it was high time to crown a new king among the diminutive four-door masses . The editors gathered eight of the most popular models in the segment and pitted them against each other, battle royale style. The magazine started by selecting the three best-selling Japanese compact sedans, the Toyota Corolla , Honda Civic and Mazda3 , which, combined, accounted for 700,000 sales last year amid fears fostered by a weakened economy. Those were joined by America's two best sellers, the Ford Focus and Chevrolet Cruze . Korea added the Kia Forte and the Hyundai Elantra , and the Volkswagen Jetta TDI from Germany rounded out the list. MT tried to get the cars as closely matched as possible; all the cars were front-drive, four-cylinder automatics with alloy wheels and stability control, all stickering somewhere in the low-$20,000 range

Filed under: Budget , Sedan , Volkswagen , Diesel 2011 Volkswagen Jetta - Click above for high-res image gallery The sixth-generation 2011 Jetta is a pretty big deal for Volkswagen . The automaker has developed a completely new platform for the new model (instead of simply relying on Golf architecture), and the end result is a car that is 3.5 inches longer than its predecessor. This should mean that much more passenger room will be on deck, enabling the Jetta to really compete within the midsize sedan segment (as well as the compact class). As for the design, it's admittedly a bit predictable, but we're glad to see the Jetta no longer being styled as a Golf sedan. What's more, we can see hints of the NCC concept car from this year's Detroit Auto Show , and while it's not overly sexy, it still looks clean and crisp.

Filed under: Sedan , Volkswagen 2011 Volkswagen Jetta leaked images - Click above for high-res image gallery Thanks to a leak from the boys at Auto Express in the UK, we can show you these few shots of the 2011 Volkswagen Jetta , along with a couple of salient details. Unlike all previous versions of the compact sedan, Volkswagen didn't just graft a trunk to the Golf hatchback to create the Jetta; instead the platform was stretched between the wheels to create a roomier package and more real estate for distinctive styling. Our European friends will reportedly be getting their choice of a 104-horsepower 1.2-liter TSI, a slightly larger 1.4 TSI with 121 horses or a 200-horsepower 2.0-liter TSI, all burning gasoline. On the diesel front, a 104-horsepower 1.6 TDI kicks things off, followed by a 2.0-liter TDI with 138 ponies. Stay tuned for more information as VW officially releases the rest of the details on its next-generation Jetta, and in the meantime check out the three leaked images in our gallery below.
Filed under: Performance , Hatchback , Volkswagen , Reviews 2010 Volkswagen GTI - click above for high-res image gallery In 1983, Run-DMC was fresh (which meant dope), Volvo 760 Turbos weighed 3,300 pounds and the 2,200-pound Volkswagen GTI made its U.S. debut. In 2010, the Rabbit-turned- Golf entered its sixth generation and attempted to draw a clear line to the first-generation car. The historical link has been made especially clear in the 2010 Volkswagen GTI, though it's gone through the typical changes you face when you hit your 30s. The GTI is now 1,000 pounds porkier, but it's still as slick as a greased pig when it comes to handling. Inside, there's plaid seat upholstery and higher-quality materials. Just like it was back in '83, the underhood motivation is only available from a four-cylinder, a change from recent generations that could be stuffed with Volkswagen's VR6

There are many small hidden players in the automotive industry that few outsiders never hear of, even though they make huge contributions to it. Gearhead Performance Group (GPG) is one of those rarely heard of, which has unveiled designs for a new Pontiac Trans Am concept based on the new 2010 Chevrolet Camaro. Fashioned after the original Camaro-based Pontiac Trans AM from 1971, the new design has been in development for the past several years and is now ready to be ordered. The modern version comes with a LS9 engine like the one found in the Corvette ZR1 except the Trans AM has a pair of twin-turbochargers bolted on instead of the standard ZR-1 supercharger.

The Buick Regal GS is a lightly disguised concept car. It is a stick-shift sedan that reaches 60 mph in less than six seconds. The GS, short for Grand Sport, was a badge worn by Buick’s muscle cars in the ’60s and ’70s. My favorite Buick was the 87 GNX. Never knew you could get a V6 to do such beautiful things
